Shanghai Electric Achieves Top Five Position in Global Desalination Project Ranking

Shanghai Electric Ranks Amongst the Best in Global Desalination Projects

Shanghai Electric has made headlines by securing the fifth spot in the global ranking for newly implemented desalination projects for the years 2024-2025. This significant achievement not only marks a four-position leap from the previous ranking but also highlights Shanghai Electric's commitment to innovation and sustainable practices in water treatment.

The ranking is based on recently published statistics by the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) and Global Water Intelligence (GWI), which provide market analysis in the water sector. Shanghai Electric's cumulative performance over the last decade (2016-2025) also reflects positively, placing them at eighth worldwide. This progression is attributed to strong international support for their expertise in desalination and project execution.

Technological Expertise Behind the Rankings

According to Shanghai Electric, this notable rise in rankings illustrates their extensive development in both thermal and membrane technologies over the past decade. The organization emphasizes their continual commitment to providing environmentally friendly and efficient desalination solutions to address global water shortages.

Shanghai Electric stands out as one of the few global firms adept in two primary desalination technologies: Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) and Reverse Osmosis (RO). By integrating both technologies, they offer comprehensive solutions tailored to diverse industrial needs. These solutions emphasize energy conservation while ensuring a steady supply of high-quality freshwater critical for industries such as energy, metallurgy, and chemical production.

Over the years, Shanghai Electric has gained widespread recognition for its technological reliability, project execution capabilities, and international brand presence. Their rise in the rankings is closely linked to their robust technological solutions covering the entire desalination spectrum, as well as their proven record of successful large-scale project deliveries both domestically and abroad.

Benchmark Projects of Distinction

Among their key projects, the Hengyi PMB petrochemical project in Brunei has emerged as a reference model, featuring a remarkable capacity of 3×12,500 tons per day. This project employs the innovative Low Temperature Multi-Effect Distillation (LT-MED) technology combined with rapid evaporation, showcasing Shanghai Electric's engineering capabilities. Moreover, the Zhejiang Petroleum Chemical Co., Ltd. wastewater heat desalination project stands out as the largest thermal desalination EPC project in China, with a formidable capacity of 305,000 tons per day across its two phases, utilizing Forward Multi-Effect Distillation (F-MED) technology.

The Yulong Petrochemical hybrid desalination project in Yantai, boasting a capacity of 160,000 tons per day, exemplifies the advanced hybrid F-MED-RO technology. By adopting a cascading utilization approach for recovering low-temperature industrial waste heat, this project sets the precedent for a low-emission, resource-efficient water production method. It is recognized as the world's largest hybrid seawater desalination project utilizing both thermal and membrane technology.

A Future-Oriented Vision

Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric emphasizes its commitment to leveraging its extensive technology portfolio and rich project execution experience to provide customers globally with more eco-friendly, cost-effective, and reliable water management solutions. The company remains dedicated to tackling the global water scarcity crisis, consistently contributing its share of
