European Cities Dominate the Global Tourist Attraction Index



In a significant development for the global tourism sector, Yanolja Research has unveiled its inaugural "Yanolja Attraction Index," which evaluates the appeal of key tourist cities around the world from a traveler's perspective. Conducted in partnership with CHRIBA at Purdue University and the HT Analysis Center at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, this innovative index assesses 191 cities worldwide.

Global Rankings and European Influence


Osaka emerged as the top global destination, but European cities solidified their strong presence, with Paris securing an impressive second place. This ranking underscores Europe's ongoing influence in the global tourism landscape, with several destinations making it into the top 50. London follows closely at sixth place, while Rome and Berlin are eighth and twenty-second, respectively. Other notable mentions include Barcelona (25th), Madrid (29th), Venice (32nd), Florence (34th), Milan (37th), Brussels (42nd), and Nice (44th). These rankings highlight the diverse attractions and cultural heritage found within major European countries such as the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Belgium.

A New Metric in Tourism Evaluation


What sets the Yanolja Attraction Index apart from traditional tourism competitiveness evaluations is its focus on the consumer perspective. It assesses city appeal based on two fundamental pillars: tourism attraction and reputation. Through an insightful four-dimensional approach, it measures beauty and natural landscapes, culture and history, experiential content, and hospitality. Dr. SooCheong Jang, a professor at Purdue University and the head of research at Yanolja, commented on the findings: “The Yanolja Attraction Index is the first attempt to analyze a city’s tourist appeal through the real opinions of travelers, moving beyond mere infrastructure assessments. The impressive performances of cities across various regions, particularly in Europe, showcase the dynamic changes in tourist preferences. Moving forward, for tourist cities to lead in the global market, discovering and communicating their unique charm will be a fundamental strategy.”
