Historic Win for Workers at Lumen Field
In a groundbreaking achievement, over 500 guest services workers at Seattle's beloved Lumen Field have ratified their first union contract under the representation of Teamsters Local 117. This momentous decision comes at a time when workers are increasingly advocating for their rights and better working conditions in the hospitality and service industries.
The vote, which took place overwhelmingly in favor of the new contract, marks a significant turning point for the employees who have long served at one of the nation's premier sports venues. Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Sounders, and Seattle Reign, is also set to host a significant portion of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, enhancing its profile and the importance of its workforce.
Highlighting the victory, Paul Dascher, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 117, expressed his pride in the collective effort that led to this triumph. "After months of hard-fought negotiations with Lumen Field management, our members voted overwhelmingly to approve a historic first contract that raises pay and delivers real protections," Dascher stated. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the efforts of the workers whenever fans gather for games in the stadium.
The journey toward union representation began over a year ago when workers voiced their need for greater clarity around scheduling, improved wages, and better working conditions. For many like Tyrha Long, who has dedicated four years to guest services at Lumen Field and participated in the negotiating committee, the contract's provisions for safety, seniority rights, and a pay increase were vital. "It's great having a voice with Teamsters. I feel like I can stand up a lot more and have people behind me who are ready to take action," Long remarked.
Ron Spradley, another member of the negotiating team and parking attendant since 2022, echoed the sentiment of empowerment that comes with union membership. With the new agreement, he noted the wage improvements and commented on the significance of being part of a larger union. "The Teamsters are a big union, and that's important because it comes with more backing—there’s people power and more force in our union. Now, we're paid at some of the highest rates for parking in the country, plus we have a contract, and will get raises every year," Spradley emphasized.
Teamsters Local 117 represents approximately 17,000 workers spread across about 200 employers throughout Washington State. This latest contract is a reflection of the ongoing commitment to worker rights and the importance of collective bargaining in creating equitable workplaces. As the Lumen Field staff prepares to embrace their newfound contractual protections, their achievement stands as an inspiring example for other service workers across the nation.
