Round Rock Healthy Hearts Achieves Major Recognition

Recently, Round Rock Healthy Hearts, a passionate student-led group from Stony Point High School, made headlines by winning first place in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Area 1 Community Awareness competition. Competing against 35 other teams at Byron P. Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, their impressive outreach has helped them garner attention as a model for community health initiatives.

Reaching a Broad Audience

The initiative has successfully touched the lives of over 300,000 individuals through a combination of social media campaigns, school presentations, and community outreach programs. They raised $1,500 for the American Heart Association, showcasing their commitment to heart health education and awareness. The group's social media channels have garnered more than 109,000 views, illustrating the power of digital outreach in fostering community engagement.

One of the most notable aspects of their efforts was a live broadcast by KXAN, which reached an astounding estimated audience of 222,000 people across Central Texas. This feature not only highlighted their achievements but also served to share critical messages surrounding heart health within a larger community context.

Innovative Outreach Strategies

To maximize their impact, Round Rock Healthy Hearts has employed an array of strategies, particularly resonating with different age groups. Their social media engagement targets both younger audiences with trending content and adults with informative posts, successfully bridging generational gaps. Such a strategic approach caught the attention of the American Heart Association, assisting them in sending out their vital messages.

The team also executed significant educational outreach by delivering 16 interactive presentations across five elementary schools. These sessions reached over 1,500 students in grades 3 to 5 and focused on vital lessons about heart diseases and healthy lifestyles. To keep the audience engaged, they included interactive elements such as prizes and questions, empowering students to convey the importance of heart health to their families.

Core Messages for Heart Health

The organization has identified five core messages that underpin their outreach efforts: 1. Small changes lead to significant health improvements. 2. Community support is crucial for building healthy habits. 3. Regular medical checkups are vital. 4. Mindful eating is important. 5. Setting incremental goals leads to lasting change. This consistent messaging has enabled community members to see heart health as an attainable goal through straightforward yet sustainable lifestyle approaches.

Celebrating Team Spirit

Dhrupad Krishna, one of the founding members of the group, attributes their success to the strong trust among team members. “Our ability to trust each other was our biggest strength. In stressful moments, we relied on each other's passion for this cause,” he remarks. Their collaborative spirit not only contributed to their win but also sowed seeds of lasting positive change within their community.

The Round Rock Healthy Hearts team members, including Ankur Shashidhar, Enrique Garza, Landon Rojas, Melissa Truong, Abhiram Nair, and Dhrupad Krishna, exemplify the dedication and hard work necessary to drive change in community health awareness.

The Future of Round Rock Healthy Hearts

As the team advances to the state competition at Kalahari in April 2025, expectations for their continued impact are high. Round Rock Healthy Hearts epitomizes the essence of community engagement through education and advocacy, proving that youth initiatives can foster significant changes in public health. This further solidifies their role as a vital resource in promoting heart health and wellness throughout the region.

Ultimately, Round Rock Healthy Hearts stands as a testament to the power of youth-led health initiatives in shaping healthier communities for tomorrow.
