Director Shunji Iwai Reflects on the 10th Anniversary of 'The Bride of Rip Van Winkle'

Celebrating a Decade of 'The Bride of Rip Van Winkle'

On June 13, 2026, the renowned director Shunji Iwai gathered with cast members and fans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of "The Bride of Rip Van Winkle" at Marunouchi Piccadilly in Tokyo. The event, organized by Japan Movie Broadcast Corporation along with Rockwell Eyes and Filmarks, featured a special screening that brought together the spirit of nostalgia and celebration.

Director Iwai opened the event by expressing his deep gratitude to the fans, saying, "Thanks to all of you who have celebrated the 'Nana's Birthday Festival' with us every year, we are able to celebrate this tenth anniversary this year." His words resonated in the packed venue, showcasing the heartfelt connection between the filmmaker and his audience.

The event was not only about watching the film but also about interaction. A special segment titled "Ten Questions" invited messages from the cast and prominent figures who have publicly shared their love for the film. Actress Haru Kuroki, along with other cast members like Go Ayano and Cocco, delivered touching messages and questions that highlighted the significance of the film in their lives.

Ayano conveyed his admiration for Iwai and posed a compelling question: "What themes do you want to explore in the future, and what do you currently seek in cinema?" Cocco's message was a nostalgic reflection on her experience in the film, saying, "It seems like a dream to have participated in this work that feels so distant, perhaps 20 or 30 years ago, even before I was born."

In addition to the actors' questions, scriptwriter Akiko Nogi inquired, "What do you focus on while shaping characters?" To which Mori Nana asked, "What has driven you in filmmaking for the past 30 years?" These inquiries created a warm atmosphere, highlighting both the personal and professional bonds formed through the film.

As the event concluded, Kuroki shared a heartfelt video message expressing her joy about the anniversary and her desire for the film to remain in people's hearts. The audience was also informed of future engagements with the director, teasing them with questions about what kind of films Iwai might create ten years from now. Iwai concluded with an introspective response: "I want to keep making films, but I believe there must also be some changes. I envision myself filming in the desert with an 8mm camera, capturing unexpected stories beyond Japan."

The event closed on a high note during the photo session, where attendees lifted the iconic "neko kanmuri" (cat crown) symbolizing the film, capturing a moment of unity that left warm feelings in the air.

Japan Movie Channel announced a special upcoming broadcast of "The Bride of Rip Van Winkle" in an upgraded 4K version on August 22, as well as the behind-the-scenes footage of the event.

Iwai expressed immense gratitude during the event, remarking, "I appreciate this rare opportunity and am overwhelmed by how many of you came today. 'The Bride of Rip Van Winkle' is a unique film among my works, celebrated annually by all of you. It is a particularly dear piece to me, and I wish to continue celebrating it with all of you for years to come. Thank you very much."

As fans and cast members continue to reminisce about the film's impact, the legacy of "The Bride of Rip Van Winkle" undoubtedly secures its place in the hearts of many, promising more to come in the years ahead.
