Maryland American Water New Rates Announcement
The Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) has recently approved a new rate structure for Maryland American Water, introducing a vital increase in water rates aimed at enhancing service quality and reflecting significant recent infrastructure investments. This adjustment marks the first update since 2019 and is expected to generate about
$2 million in additional annual revenue.
Details of the Rate Increase
The approved rate hike was officially approved on
February 26, 2026, as part of a settlement that supports approximately
$22 million directed towards critical improvements in water treatment systems and distribution networks. Maryland American Water filed the rate request back on
August 1, 2025 to ensure ongoing compliance with state and federal standards, as well as to meet the increasing demands and expectations from their customer base.
Laura Runkle, the President of Maryland American Water, emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining high service standards while ensuring reliability for its customers. “We are committed to making the necessary investments to continue the high-quality service our customers expect and deserve,” she stated.
Impact on Customers
For
residential customers in Bel Air who consume an average of
4,000 gallons per month, bills will increase by approximately
$10 per month, with an additional $10 increase set for
January 1, 2027. In areas like the Severn District, residential customers will transition from a quarterly flat fee to a monthly flat fee starting February 26, 2026, with an increase of
approximately $1.50 per month. This new structure positions Maryland American Water to better fund essential operational and infrastructural upgrades, thereby improving service delivery.
