One Month of Pandas: The PANDART Exhibition
In the heart of Ueno, Tokyo, beloved for its pandas, a new artistic venture is set to unfold at the Geidai Art Plaza. In this collaboration between Shogakukan and Tokyo University of the Arts, the exhibition titled
'PANDART: Geidai Panda' will grace the gallery from
May 16 to June 14, 2026. This special event will showcase works inspired by the iconic animal, created by twelve talented artists associated with or alumni of Tokyo University of the Arts.
The panda, an emblematic figure of Ueno, is often lauded for its charming white and black hues and an air of mystery that captures the hearts of many. Yet, it also raises profound questions about identity and symbolism. The exhibition's unique concept is not merely to present the pandas we know and love but to delve deeper into what this creature signifies in our lives.
With an impending absence of pandas in Japan by 2026, this exhibition aims to invoke feelings of nostalgia and questioning:
What do pandas mean to us? This exploration leads us to reflect on our cultural and emotional ties to the panda as it transcends mere representation as a living being to embody a cultural symbol.
An Artistic Resurrection
At the Geidai Art Plaza, the narrative of
'A Month of Pandas Returning to Ueno' will be brought to life, but these aren't the typical animals you'll find at a zoo. Rather, they will be representations of
PANDART, an exhilarating artistic interpretation celebrating the essence of pandas through various lenses.
Visitors can anticipate works that may range from hyper-realistic renditions of pandas to fantastical, vibrant interpretations. Each artist will explore their own understanding of the panda's core essence and express it through diverse artistic techniques.
As the attributes of the panda are embraced and transformed into art, these new representations aim to weave fresh memories into the tapestry of Ueno. Just as these artistic creations will emerge, they will also invite visitors to ponder their own experiences and connections to this fascinating creature.
