U.S. Army Veteran Scott Restivo Honored with All-Terrain Trackchair by The Independence Fund
All-Terrain Trackchair for Army Veteran Scott Restivo
The journey of U.S. Army Veteran Scott Restivo is a testament to resilience and the spirit of service. Restivo, who valiantly served his country, will be recognized for his bravery and sacrifices at the upcoming Checkers Hockey game on February 22. The Independence Fund, a national non-profit dedicated to supporting Veterans, is honoring him with a specialized all-terrain trackchair.
Scott Restivo’s story commands attention. While serving in the military, he experienced a catastrophic explosion that led to the amputation of one of his legs. Beyond this physical trauma, he also faces ongoing challenges, including a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and hearing loss, compounded by obstacles in receiving adequate prosthetic care. Reflecting on his experience, Restivo poignantly stated, "I thought the war was the end of the battle, but the fight has been for my life while seeking medical care."
Recognizing the hurdles that come with rehabilitation, The Independence Fund intervened after Restivo reached out in 2024 seeking support for better prosthetic care. The organization has since advocated on his behalf to improve his situation. Although the road to full mobility is still a work in progress, the introduction of the all-terrain trackchair aims to bring some measure of independence back into Restivo's life.
Clark Pennington, Chief Operating Officer of The Independence Fund, emphasized the need for such initiatives: "Our Mobility program provides all-terrain trackchairs to Veterans who suffer from mobility issues and want to enjoy getting out in the world unencumbered by the sacrifices they made on our behalf. Restivo faithfully served our country, and now he needs our support. A trackchair cannot replace the need for proper prosthetic care, but it re-engages him with his community."
The presentation of Restivo’s trackchair will be a moment of celebration, coordinated in partnership with Checkers Hockey, during the game at the iconic Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. Notably, returning to the event will be celebrated American submission wrestler and third-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Gordon Ryan, who will join in recognizing Restivo’s exemplary service.
Media representatives are encouraged to arrive early, between 2 PM and 4 PM, to connect with Scott during a special hour prior to the game. The East Charlotte Room, conveniently located between Ovens Auditorium and Bojangles Coliseum, will welcome journalists keen on sharing Restivo's inspiring journey with the public.
The Independence Fund has made significant strides since its inception at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, dedicated to aiding our most catastrophically wounded services members. Their programs cater not just to Veterans but also to their families, covering a broader range of those injured in the line of duty. One of their most impactful offerings is the all-terrain trackchair program, which has already made a difference for over 2,600 Heroes, allowing them to navigate the outdoors and reconnect with their passions.
By adjusting their framework to empower individuals like Scott Restivo, The Independence Fund works tirelessly to restore dignity, independence, and quality of life for veterans nationwide. The introduction of the trackchair won’t erase past challenges, but it is a significant step in Restivo’s ongoing journey toward recovery and re-engagement with life and the community he holds dear.
