Veteran Sailors Participate in Figawi Race to Combat Veteran Suicide

Veterans Set Sail in Figawi Race

The Westport Group (TWG), a mission-driven organization based in Braintree, MA, has joined forces once again with America's Warrior Partnership (AWP) for the prestigious Figawi Race, held on Memorial Day weekend. This time-honored sailing event takes participants on a voyage from Hyannis, MA to Nantucket, MA, aiming not only to compete but also to significantly raise awareness and generate funds for the pressing issue of veteran suicide.

Jim Lorraine, President and CEO of AWP, emphasized that suicide prevention transcends a mere program. He stated, "Suicide prevention is not a stand-alone program but rather the culmination of exemplary service, collaboration, care, compassion, and productive partnerships that stem from genuine relationships." This approach highlights AWP's commitment to working with an extensive network of 4,000 partners, alongside their long-term project, Operation Deep Dive™, which explores the intricacies of veteran suicide.

The TWG sailing team, led by accomplished female captain Martha Kristian, consists of veterans committed to using their participation as a catalyst for conversation. Captain Kristian remarked, “Our previous efforts have not only brought awareness to this critical cause but have also encouraged at-risk veterans to ask for help.” This is a sentiment echoed by Chris Kristian, TWG’s Executive Vice President and Managing Director, who recognizes the importance of utilizing the race as a platform for outreach while staying determined to win.

In the past year, TWG has successfully raised over $50,000 to support the mission of AWP. This year, the team will compete aboard the Defender, making history not only through sailing achievements but also through their unwavering dedication to a cause that affects so many. Among the crew are notable veterans such as David Fridovich, who served as the highest-ranking Special Forces officer in the U.S. Army, and Bobbi Scroggin, a former All-Army boxer and veteran of the Afghanistan conflict.

AWP has dedicated itself to being a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization committed to preventing veteran suicide by providing proactive support through local organizations. Their focus is on enhancing the quality of life for veterans and providing resources to former service members and their families, ensuring they receive the necessary support before crises arise.

TWG, as a veteran-operated entity, not only aims to protect businesses from unforeseen challenges through its innovative insurance solutions but also places high importance on community involvement. With a vision centered around meaningful contributions to causes that matter, they proudly back both AWP and the Figawi Charities, encouraging individuals and businesses alike to join in making a difference.

Together, through sailing and community collaboration, we can sail towards a future where veteran suicide is no longer a prevalent issue among those who have served their country with honor.
