In a bid to understand consumer behavior towards credit cards, Cocomoola recently conducted an extensive survey focusing on AEON cardholders in Japan. The survey sought to uncover the reasons users prefer specific types of AEON cards, the features they value the most, and the purchasing habits associated with these cards.

Survey Methodology


The survey utilized an online research methodology, with tools provided by Freezy. A total of 288 responses were collected from male (170) and female (118) AEON card users during the March 2025 survey period. This data reflects insights from cardholders actively using AEON cards across Japan.

Key Findings


The survey results indicate a strong preference for the AEON Card (WAON integrated), with approximately 45% of respondents owning this card. Other popular options included the AEON Gold Card and the AEON Card Select, with ownership rates of 22% and 18%, respectively. The survey also explored users' reasons for obtaining an AEON card, revealing that 77% of respondents cited regular shopping at AEON group locations or affiliated facilities as their primary motivator.

Reasons for Issuing the AEON Card


The top reasons for choosing the AEON card were:
  • - Shopping frequency at AEON stores: 223 respondents (77.43%) indicated they frequently shop at AEON locations or partner establishments.
  • - Usage of AEON banking services: 34 respondents (11.81%) mentioned they often utilize AEON bank ATMs.
  • - Cinema visits: 25 respondents (8.68%) highlighted their regular visits to AEON cinemas as a reason.

Advantages of the AEON Card


When it comes to perceiving benefits of the AEON card, users highlighted the following aspects:
1. Ease of earning points at AEON stores: 115 respondents (39.93%) appreciated how easily they can accumulate points while shopping.
2. Low annual fees: 102 respondents (35.42%) noted that the affordability of annual fees was a significant factor in their decision to choose the AEON card.
3. Auto-charge features for WAON: 24 respondents (8.33%) valued the convenience of auto-charge functionality.

In total, these advantages accounted for around three-quarters of all responses, reflecting the strong appeal of AEON cards in terms of rewards and cost-effectiveness.

Selection Criteria for AEON Cards


Respondents shared their key considerations when selecting an AEON card:
  • - Annual fees: A significant 53.82% of the respondents prioritized low annual fees.
  • - Benefits and perks: 17.36% were focused on available privileges.
  • - Return rates: 13.89% looked at cashback and reward rates.

The results provide valuable insights into consumer preferences regarding credit cards, especially highlighting the compelling reasons behind AEON card ownership in the Japanese market.
