Kumho Tire Partners with Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to Nurture Local Racing Talent
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), often referred to as "The Race to the Clouds", is set to make a significant impact on the local racing community with the introduction of the Gaining Traction Program, a new initiative led by Kumho Tire. Announced during the signing ceremony on January 28, 2026, the program is designed to support budding automotive talents from Colorado, particularly focusing on those with five years or fewer of competitive racing experience on the challenging Pikes Peak course.
With a storied history dating back to 1916, the annual PPIHC showcases a unique 12.42-mile course that climbs 4,720 feet over 156 turns, culminating at an impressive elevation of 14,115 feet. The event attracts a range of vehicles, from production-based models to highly specialized racing machines. Kumho Tire, a top-tier tire manufacturer, aims to leverage its expertise in high-performance tire production to help emerging drivers excel in this demanding environment.
As part of the Gaining Traction Program, Kumho Tire will provide financial assistance, KUMHO V730 tires, and additional resources like mentoring and development opportunities. Selected drivers will have their entry fees covered and will be showcased at events like Fan Fest, making it easier for them to gain exposure and experience in competitive racing.
John Yoon, the senior vice president of marketing for Kumho Tire USA, expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, stating, "We're not just looking for a champion; we want to support athletes with raw talent and aspiration. By offering resources and support early in their careers, we can significantly influence their journey in motorsports." This commitment is reflected in the decision to sponsor the 2026 Rookie of the Year award, which aims to acknowledge and encourage fresh talent participating in the race.
Eligibility for the Gaining Traction Program includes being a driver or team based in Colorado and having a maximum of five years of experience at the PPIHC. Kumho will consider drivers who demonstrate exceptional skills and potential for growth. This program not only seeks to enhance the local racing community but also reinforces Kumho Tire’s dedication to motorsports, as they strive to validate their technology and engage with consumers through these partnerships.
The KUMHO V730 tires, with their enhanced grip and handling characteristics, are specifically engineered for competitive environments. Their unique formulation combines high-grip synthetic resins with fine carbon black to optimize traction, making them well-suited for the extreme conditions of Pikes Peak racing.
Kumho Tire has built its reputation over 60 years, established as one of the world’s major tire manufacturers through continuous innovation and commitment to quality. With a vast global presence, including research and development facilities in Korea, the USA, Germany, and China, Kumho exports products to over 180 countries and operates numerous subsidiaries and offices worldwide.
As the PPIHC continues to attract a diverse range of competitors and spectators, Kumho Tire's partnership is a promising step towards fostering local talent and enhancing the legacy of the race. This collaboration signifies more than just a sponsorship; it embodies a mutual commitment to nurturing future racing stars and promoting the sport within Colorado. As the event approaches in June, both the PPIHC and Kumho Tire eagerly anticipate the exciting developments that will come from this partnership, advocating not only for top-tier performance but also for community engagement in the world of motorsports.
