Herzing University Launches Online BSN Program to Combat Texas Nursing Shortage
Herzing University Expands Online Nursing Education in Texas
In a strategic move to alleviate Texas' growing nursing crisis, Herzing University has announced the launch of its online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, with enrollment set to open for the Fall 2025 semester. This initiative aims to equip aspiring nurses in the Dallas and Houston regions with the tools needed to succeed in the healthcare industry.
Texas is facing a significant nursing shortage, with the Texas Health and Human Services projecting a demand that will surpass supply by 57,000 registered nurses by 2032. Compounding the issue, the Texas Hospital Association revealed that in 2023, around 13,705 qualified nursing candidates were turned away from nursing schools due to limited faculty and clinical placements. Herzing's online BSN program represents a critical opportunity to enhance the capacity of Texas' future nursing workforce.
Herzing University's BSN program employs a hybrid educational approach that combines flexible online coursework with hands-on clinical experiences. Students will engage in synchronous and asynchronous classes along with necessary clinical rotations and intensives offered at Herzing's campuses or partner sites. This structure is designed to provide comprehensive education tailored to students' varying lifestyles, especially those managing full-time jobs or familial responsibilities.
President of Herzing University, Renée Herzing, stated, "Our online BSN program can help provide quick and necessary relief to the Texas nursing shortage. For 60 years, we have created pathways for dedicated students who aspire to improve their communities. Our proven hybrid model ensures a well-rounded education, regardless of a student's living circumstances. We are thrilled to contribute to enhanced access to quality healthcare across Texas."
With the ability to complete the program in three years or less, students can transfer up to 90 approved credits, promoting a more efficient path to graduation. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with Texas' objective of having 60% of working-age residents hold a post-secondary credential of value by 2030.
In addition to the BSN program, Herzing University provides pathways for registered nurses to pursue further education, including graduate programs for a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and Doctor of Nursing Education (DNE). These online programs aim to foster career advancement across various nursing leadership and specialty roles, all while maintaining flexibility for working professionals.
Herzing, founded in 1965, is an accredited, private nonprofit institution with a commitment to serving diverse learners. It offers career-focused programs in nursing, healthcare, technology, and business across 12 campuses and online.
The university is recognized by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), ensuring the quality of its educational offerings. Moreover, the online BSN, MSN, and DNP programs receive accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), further solidifying the rigorous educational standards upheld by the institution.
With its opening of the online BSN program in Texas, Herzing University steps up to meet the pressing demands of the state's healthcare system, ultimately preparing the next generation of nurses to deliver quality care across the region.
