F-Pico's Eco Store Initiative Reaches New Heights
F-Pico, a leading manufacturer of food containers based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has been making significant strides in its collaborative efforts with retail companies across Japan. Focused on sustainability, the "Eco Store Collaborative Declaration" has recently seen its member stores exceed
4,300 locations, marking a significant milestone in the initiative. This push towards a more sustainable, circular economy aims to expand to
5,000 stores by October 1, 2025, working in conjunction with
126 partner companies nationwide.
Understanding Store-to-Store Recycling
At the heart of this initiative is the innovative
"Store-to-Store" recycling concept. This approach entails supermarkets actively participating in the recycling of food trays and PET bottles. Whenever these items are used or sold, they are collected back at the same store, allowing for a
horizontal recycling process. Community members can bring their used food trays and PET bottles to recycling boxes positioned at participating stores.
Once collected, F-Pico utilizes its recycling methods known as
"Tray-to-Tray" and
"Bottle-to-Clear Container", transforming the collected resources into eco-friendly products such as
“Eco Trays,” “Eco APET,” and
“Eco OPET.” This process significantly reduces CO2 emissions by
37% compared to products made from virgin petroleum-based materials. This circular recycling allows these eco-products to be utilized again as food containers within the same supermarkets, contributing to a sustainable cycle.
Strengthening Community Environmental Education Activities
F-Pico is committed to expanding the scope of its Store-to-Store initiative by actively promoting environmental education in local communities. By fostering close relationships between stores and communities, the company aims to enhance eco-activities on a broader scale. They plan to conduct various programs that include outreach lessons at elementary schools, displaying informative posters in stores, and utilizing digital signage to encourage local residents to participate in horizontal recycling efforts.
