Glen-Gery Corporation, a leading brick manufacturer and part of Brickworks North America, has officially announced the winners of its inaugural Architect Collaboration Program. This exciting initiative aimed to engage architects, designers, and students by inviting them to submit their original design concepts for custom brick shapes. The selected winning designs not only showcase remarkable creativity but also offer the winning designers a prestigious opportunity to join Glen-Gery's Research and Development Team as honorary members.
The versatility of brick in architectural design is put on full display by the winners of this program. Tim Leese, Glen-Gery's director of marketing, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Brick's versatility allows it to take on unique architectural forms like no other material. Glen-Gery's bricks, renowned for their precision and durability, bring even the most imaginative concepts to life." This program is not just about recognizing outstanding designs; it also aims to spark meaningful collaborations within the architecture community.
Among the notable winners are:
1.
Brittany Macomber from Morris Adjmi Architects with her design,
Trigon Brick, which modernizes classic brick masonry details. This brick features a unique dimension and depth that offers great flexibility, enabling it to stand alone or be mixed with other modular bricks for various patterns.
2.
Edward Jose from Loci Architecture created the design called
Curve, a sleek, elongated curved brick. This innovative shape can be laid in numerous wall configurations, producing distinct surface effects. Its design reduces weight in typical brick veneer assemblies while enhancing stability, and its curvature plays a significant role in sound management in urban environments.
3. The
Facet Brick, conceived by
Justin Bright of Gnome Architects, features chamfered corners that create diagonal facets on one face. The orientation of this simple yet effective design allows for various patterns and textures, enriching architectural aesthetics.
4.
Colin Rupp, also from Gnome Architects, developed
The Weaver, utilizing an alternating bevel to create intricate weaving textures, presenting a captivating play of solid and void.
During the Fall of 2024, the winning architects brought their creative visions to life at Glen-Gery's Mid-Atlantic Manufacturing Plant, located in Shoemakersville, Pennsylvania. Here, the winners hand-molded their unique brick designs, transforming initial concepts into tangible products that will serve as focal points in upcoming building projects. Glen-Gery’s commitment to custom brick creation allows them to cater to the specific needs of any architectural project, demonstrating the creative potential of brick as a versatile building material.
