WHG Shinjuku Partners with Keio Department Store for Sustainable Luggage Recycling Campaign

WHG Shinjuku's Commitment to Sustainability

In a proactive step towards environmental responsibility, WHG Shinjuku, which includes both the Shinjuku Washington Hotel and the Hotel Gracery Shinjuku, is collaborating with Keio Department Store to tackle the growing issue of abandoned luggage left by tourists. The initiative, named the "Unused Suitcase Free Collection & Special Discount Exchange Campaign," will commence on September 25, 2025. This campaign is designed to alleviate the problem of discarded luggage at hotels and airports, which has intensified with the rise in tourism.

As tourist numbers surged in recent years, the prevalence of travelers leaving unused suitcases at hotels or in transit hubs became increasingly urgent. WHG Shinjuku recognized that managing abandoned luggage was a significant operational challenge and, as such, decided to participate in this campaign in a bid to find effective solutions.

Campaign Details

This initiative will allow guests staying at WHG Shinjuku properties to receive a special voucher during their stay. These vouchers can be used to purchase suitcases at discounted prices in the travel bag section of Keio Department Store, specifically at the ACE brand on the fourth floor. Guests who take advantage of this offer can then return their unused suitcases to the WHG Shinjuku hotels free of charge.

Once collected, the discarded luggage will be managed under the ACE Recycle Project, operated by ACE Co., Ltd. This program is dedicated to refurbishing the functional parts of the collected suitcases. After repairs, the luggage will be repurposed for use by non-profit organizations and public institutions in Japan. Furthermore, any remaining unusable materials will be transformed into resources, such as boiler fuel, to help reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability.

Through this effort, WHG Shinjuku aims not only to address the issue of abandoned luggage but also to contribute to a more sustainable society by introducing innovative services that align with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
