Forval's New Initiative Towards Sustainable Business Practices
Forval, a Tokyo-based consulting firm, has been entrusted by Kawasaki City to promote ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, part of the city’s effort for sustainable growth by 2026. This initiative coincides with Kawasaki City’s ambitious strategy, "Kawasaki Carbon Zero Challenge 2050," aimed at achieving a decarbonized society by mid-century.
Understanding the Background
Kawasaki City is taking significant steps to implement a robust sustainability strategy amid increasing pressure for corporations to adopt ESG. Recognizing the crucial role of regional finance in national green growth strategies, the city aims to support the decarbonization of enterprises through ESG financing. However, the challenge remains acute for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), which are often less prepared to meet escalating demands from larger corporations for sustainability in the supply chain. This is where Forval comes in. By undertaking this responsibility, Forval plans to assist local businesses in overcoming obstacles and enhancing their practices to improve both their corporate value and the local economy.
Details of the Assignment
The urgency of implementing ESG strategies is underlined by upcoming regulations. By March 2027, publicly traded firms will be mandated to disclose greenhouse gas emissions data, especially concerning Scope 3 emissions. In response, Forval will undertake several key initiatives:
1.
Surveys and Research: Identify the current state of ESG practices among SMEs in Kawasaki.
2.
Support Programs: Facilitate hands-on assistance for SMEs aiming to adopt ESG management practices.
3.
Consortium Participation: Assist in the management of an information exchange consortium focusing on decarbonization, ensuring that the latest compliance updates and sustainability information are circulated effectively.
Moreover, an indicator will be put into the next comprehensive plan for Kawasaki City to measure the proportion of local SMEs engaging in decarbonization efforts, thus driving the continuous improvement of these practices.
Special Seminar for Small and Medium Enterprises
To effectively disseminate the importance of ESG management, Forval will host a special seminar on June 23, 2026. This seminar aims to educate SMEs on how to implement sustainable business practices, enhancing not only their operational resilience but also earning customer trust—a crucial factor for long-term growth.
