ZERO Prostate Cancer Unveils $20 Million Initiative to Combat Disparities in Survival Rates

Blitz the Barriers: A Radical Initiative to Combat Prostate Cancer Disparities

Zero Prostate Cancer has announced a groundbreaking initiative named Blitz the Barriers, with an ambitious funding goal of $20 million aimed at reducing disparities in prostate cancer survival rates across the country. This effort, particularly significant during Cancer Prevention Month, is driven by the pressing need to improve equity in cancer care for populations that face higher risks, including Black men, veterans, and individuals in rural or underserved areas.

Understanding the Urgency

Prostate cancer stands as the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States, claiming a life approximately every 15 minutes. Alarmingly, Black men are 75% more likely to develop aggressive forms of the disease and have double the mortality rate compared to their counterparts. Additionally, veterans are twice as likely to receive a prostate cancer diagnosis, highlighting the stark disparities present that often stem from systemic biases rather than financial constraints.

The Blitz the Barriers initiative seeks to address these alarming statistics by combining education, outreach, and technology to enhance the availability of equitable healthcare. Under the leadership of Courtney Bugler, President and CEO of ZERO Prostate Cancer, the initiative will target 12 high-risk urban and rural communities over the next ten years.

Strategic Partnerships

Leading this initiative is Novartis, the lead founding partner, pledging $7.5 million to kickstart Blitz the Barriers. ZERO Prostate Cancer plans to initially implement this program in cities such as Atlanta and Baltimore—areas reported to have significant disparities in prostate cancer health outcomes. There are plans for future expansions to other regions, including Washington D.C., New Orleans, Detroit, Houston, among others. The goal is to ultimately save 100,000 lives by the year 2035 through heightened access to necessary resources.

The Role of Mathew Knowles

The included presence of Mathew Knowles, renowned educator, music executive, and cancer advocate, as the new global ambassador for ZERO's initiative adds an impactful voice to the campaign. Knowles shares a personal narrative, having tragically lost family members to prostate cancer, making his involvement particularly poignant. “I understand the importance of prioritizing my health as a male breast cancer survivor and BRCA gene carrier,” he noted. His firsthand experience highlights the critical role of early screening and the need for more open conversations about prostate health.

Tackling Systemic Issues

Courtney Bugler further emphasizes, “Access to reliable experts, information, and a strong support network can transform an individual's cancer journey.
