Continuity Biosciences Secures $9.6 Million Grant for HIV Prevention
Continuity Biosciences, LLC, a clinical-stage biotechnology firm, has received significant support in the form of a $9.6 million grant from the Gates Foundation. This funding is allocated for the advancement of a cutting-edge subcutaneous implant tailored for the long-acting delivery of antiretroviral medications, aimed at providing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) against HIV, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
The innovative implant is designed to release HIV prevention medication continuously over several years from just one insertion under the skin. This development sets itself apart from conventional daily oral pills and requires fewer clinical visits, thereby simplifying the adherence process for individuals at risk of HIV infection.
Dr. Ramakrishna "Krishna" Venugopalan, co-founder and CEO of Continuity Biosciences, emphasized the potential of this technology to combat challenges posed by current prevention methods.
