Royal Mint Celebrates Pink Floyd with a Unique Commemorative Coin

On May 14, 2026, the Royal Mint unveiled an exceptional commemorative coin honoring the legendary band Pink Floyd. This special edition coin marks a significant moment, celebrating over half a century since the band first emerged from the underground music scene in London to redefine modern music.

The coin's design is striking, featuring the iconic prism associated with Pink Floyd's seminal album, The Dark Side of the Moon, on its reverse side. This imagery is one of the most recognizable symbols in music history and represents the band's visionary approach to art and sound. Some limited edition coins will include a special rainbow prism effect, enhancing the iconic design with vibrant colors. The original artwork of the album cover was created by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis and illustrated by George Hardie. To date, The Dark Side of the Moon has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

Pink Floyd joins an illustrious list of British music icons recognized by the Royal Mint, including David Bowie, George Michael, and Freddie Mercury. To date, nearly half a million coins from this Music Legends series have found their way into the hands of collectors and music enthusiasts in 108 countries.

Rebecca Morgan, commemorative coin director at the Royal Mint, praised Pink Floyd’s enduring influence, stating, "Pink Floyd is truly one of those rare groups whose music and imagery have transcended generations. The iconic prism is immediately recognizable to fans around the world, and Henry Gray has done an exceptional job bringing it to life with artistry and detail deserving of this legendary band. Their impact on music, art, and culture is immeasurable, and we are incredibly proud that the Royal Mint can help preserve this legacy forever."

In addition to the commemorative coin, Pink Floyd fans will also have the chance to acquire an exclusive guitar pick, available in a limited quantity and crafted from gold, silver, and dark chrome. Designed by Royal Mint artist Daniel Thorne, the pick closely ties to Pink Floyd due to its relation to the album The Dark Side of the Moon. The guitar pick holds a special place in the band’s history, famously associated with David Gilmour's legendary solo in the track "Time," which is considered one of the most iconic moments in rock music history, further serving as a tribute to Pink Floyd’s enduring musical heritage.

Formed in London in 1965 by members Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, with David Gilmour joining in 1968, Pink Floyd defined the progressive rock genre and produced some of the most celebrated albums in recording history. Their masterpieces, including The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979), secured their place among the most innovative and influential bands of all time. More than 50 years later, their music continues to captivate new generations of fans around the globe.

The Pink Floyd commemorative coin will be available for purchase starting at £18.50 from 9 AM on May 14, 2026. For more information or to place an order, visit www.royalmint.com/pinkfloyd.
