Epson's Innovative Projection for Cirque du Soleil ECHO Tour
As Cirque du Soleil ECHO travels across various cities, one element remains constant: its stunningly immersive visual presentation, made possible by Epson's state-of-the-art projectors. These compact yet high-performance laser projectors are key to transforming each show's environment into a dynamic and captivating experience that adapts alongside the action on stage.
ECHO: A Kaleidoscope of Color and Emotion
ECHO is not just any performance; it invites the audience into a vibrant tapestry of inventiveness, hope, and empathy. This show uniquely blends poetry, performing arts, and breathtaking acrobatics to explore the delicate balance of existence shared between humans, animals, and their surroundings. The vision behind ECHO is to create an unparalleled experience within a Big Top setting, and Epson’s projection technology enhances that ambition by delivering visual magic like never before.
Projection Technology that Moves with the Action
At the heart of ECHO's stunning visual effects is an innovative projection system featuring a giant cube tracked by ten strategically positioned projectors surrounding the audience. As the cube ascends and descends on stage, the imagery projected dynamically shifts with it, fostering a profound connection between the physical and digital components of the performance. The integration of structured lighting and real-time camera tracking allows for instant adjustment of imagery based on the performers' movements, wirelessly blending artistic elements.
Alexis Rivest, Technical Director at VYV, emphasized the complexity of the ECHO show, highlighting how the real-time tracking system allows projections to seamlessly change perspective based on the cube's movements. This technological avant-garde elevates viewer engagement by creating a synchronized and cohesive visual experience.
However, adapting such a sophisticated visual environment poses its own challenges, especially for a touring production like ECHO. Equipment must withstand various environmental factors—like rain and dust—experienced during a typical tour. Stefanus Roos, Assistant Head of Video for ECHO, noted the impact of these unpredictable elements on equipment functionality, reinforcing the decision to replace aging projectors with Epson's advanced technology.
Designed to Excel on Tour
Thanks to Epson's partnership, Cirque du Soleil replaced outdated projection equipment with newer models specifically designed for high performance, superior image quality, and operational efficiency essential for a nomadic production. The transformation also presented an opportunity to optimize the projection system in accordance with the production's actual touring conditions. Given the limited physical space available for equipment and the challenges regarding weight and size, these were crucial design considerations.
Project Manager Christian Blais from Cirque du Soleil explained that space limitations were a significant hurdle, necessitating the use of more compact projectors. The new Epson models are notably smaller and lighter than their predecessors, making transportation and setup during tours significantly more manageable. This efficiency enables the company to transport more equipment with fewer trucks, minimizing logistical challenges.
Rapid Setup in a Race Against Time
For an internationally touring production like ECHO, scenes unfold not over several days, but in tight hours. After arriving in a new location, the technical team faces a narrow window to reassemble the projection system in preparation for the performance. Michaël Fortin, Technical Director of Touring Shows, illustrated the urgency of their processes: “We have roughly eight hours to change the components. Once that time starts, there's no turning back.”
After building the projector rigging, the team mounts the projectors and connects the necessary cabling. «Our first step is to install our structures, raise the projectors, and then wire the entire system,” Roos said. Calibration follows to ensure that the ten projectors collaborate flawlessly, merging into a single, seamless visual experience.
Roos elaborated that the installation of new projectors has notably lessened setup time and reduced ongoing maintenance needs, thus enhancing operational efficiency.
Consistent Quality Across Borders
Technical reliability is vital for Cirque du Soleil. Regardless of where ECHO is performed, whether in Montreal or Mexico City, every audience should enjoy a visually comparable experience—irrespective of the performance location. Roos added, «Thanks to Epson's global support system, we uphold a consistent experience across all shows.”
Epson's laser projectors employ advanced 3-chip 3LCD technology that optimizes brightness and color fidelity, ensuring vivid colors and clarity are achieved consistently. These projectors are designed with adaptability in mind, enabling compatibility with various installation requirements while delivering the quality needed for large-scale entertainment productions.
For the ECHO team, the impact of the Epson projectors is especially pronounced within their vibrant visual content. Roos remarked, “The colors are far more vivid and bright.”
A Unified Technology Fleet for the Future
The projection upgrades serve as a vital component of Cirque du Soleil's overarching goal to establish a cohesive technology fleet across its productions. Standardizing on one projector platform simplifies both training and technical support, providing a technological foundation that cultivates creativity.
The collaboration between Epson and Cirque du Soleil deepens with each project, evidenced by Epson's designation as the Official Projector Partner in 2024. Together, they continue to explore innovative projection techniques that elevate storytelling and create immersive experiences. This relationship began to flourish during Cirque du Soleil ALIZÉ™, its inaugural European residency where Epson projectors crafted an evocative visual experience in Berlin.
Jason Meyer, Director of Product Management at Epson America, emphasized the double-edged nature of performance in live entertainment, stating, “Exceptional image quality from Epson is paramount, but consistent performance each night is equally important. In complex, visually immersive productions like ECHO, reliability is non-negotiable. We strive to support Cirque du Soleil in narrating its stories effectively.”
Ultimately, for ECHO, the partnership with Epson is grounded in making elaborate technology operate harmoniously, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the story without distraction. Fortin expressed appreciation for Epson's efforts, noting, “They were incredible at grasping our needs, listening to our constraints, and providing the optimal solution.”
Audiences eager to experience ECHO's captivating visual spectacle can catch Cirque du Soleil ECHO on its international tour in Mexico until late 2026, before it moves on to Miami, Florida, and Italy in 2027.
