Los Angeles Jury Awards Motorcyclist $4.537 Million For Injuries From Reckless U-Turn

Landmark Verdict for Motorcyclist in Palmdale

In a significant legal triumph, a Los Angeles County jury awarded $4.537 million to a motorcyclist severely injured in a collision caused by an unsafe U-turn. The incident, which took place near the SR-14 onramp in Palmdale, California, was the culmination of nearly five years of legal battles following the accident that occurred in September 2020.

Represented by the reputable PARRIS Law Firm, the plaintiff was riding westbound on Avenue S when a Ford F-350 truck made an abrupt and unsafe lane change in an attempt to execute a U-turn. This reckless maneuver directly led to a collision, which resulted in catastrophic orthopedic injuries for the victim, who was subsequently thrown over the handlebars of his motorcycle and landed forcefully on the pavement.

The impact of the collision caused the plaintiff to sustain multiple traumatic injuries, notably compound fractures in his forearms, a shattered elbow requiring a radial head replacement, and chronic damage to his shoulder that necessitated further surgical intervention. Despite extensive rehabilitation efforts, the plaintiff continues to endure daily physical pain, hindering his ability to perform regular activities and leading to post-traumatic arthritis in various joints.

Medical experts testified during the trial, confirming that the injuries resulted from the crash would lead to lifelong complications for the plaintiff. “This was an entirely preventable collision that forever changed our client's life,” remarked Alexander Wheeler, the lead trial attorney at the PARRIS Law Firm. “In an instant, those things were taken from him because another driver made a reckless choice. We’re proud that the jury recognized the truth and held the defendant accountable.”

The jury's awarded sum also reflects the emotional and relational toll that the incident had on the plaintiff. The monetary compensation includes allocations for future medical expenses, which total approximately $1.94 million, along with $1.5 million for past noneconomic losses, $1 million for future noneconomic losses, and $100,000 for past noneconomic losses associated with the loss of consortium claim. These figures illustrate the extensive impact of the collision on the plaintiff’s life beyond just the physical injuries.

The trial, which showcased the critical importance of road safety and personal accountability, has brought significant attention to the ongoing issues surrounding reckless driving behaviors. The case is officially recorded as Los Angeles Superior Court Case No. 22AVCV00191.
