BAE Systems Secures $16 Million Contract for M-Code GPS for Navy Landings

BAE Systems Expands Navy's Precision Landing Capabilities

BAE Systems has recently secured a $16 million contract from Collins Aerospace to design and develop a cutting-edge M-Code Global Positioning System (GPS) for the U.S. Navy's Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS). This crucial update aims to enhance the Navy's capabilities in landing aircraft with unparalleled accuracy and safety, even in the most challenging conditions.

The M-Code GPS technology represents a significant advancement in military navigation systems. It is specifically designed to improve resilience against jamming and spoofing, thereby ensuring that military operations can continue without disruption in today's complex electronic warfare environments. This system will supply precise positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) data, which is essential during precision landings, particularly on aircraft carriers.

The Importance of M-Code GPS for the Navy

Joint Precision Approach and Landing System, or JPALS, is the Navy's next-generation GPS navigation system that plays an indispensable role in guiding aircraft to their desired landing spots. By integrating the M-Code capability into JPALS, the Navy aims to reduce pilot workload and improve overall operational effectiveness. The M-Code signal, known for its encrypted nature, significantly enhances the security of navigational information.

Molly O'Brien, BAE Systems' program manager for Airborne GPS, expressed the significance of this contract. She stated, "This award marks a significant milestone in the continued modernization of JPALS, a mission-critical capability enabling safe, precision aircraft recoveries aboard Navy carriers in all weather and environments. Integrating M-Code strengthens JPALS against evolving threats and ensures our warfighters maintain a decisive operational advantage."

Transitioning to M-Code with DIGAR Technology

BAE Systems is already responsible for providing the current GPS solution used in JPALS, which employs Selective Availability Anti Spoofing Module (SAASM) receivers. With this new initiative, the company will leverage its proprietary Digital GPS Anti-Jam Receiver, known as DIGAR™-500M, to facilitate the transition to M-Code technology. This advanced system is designed to support dual SAASM and M-Code operations, catering to a mixed fleet of aircraft and enhancing both anti-jam and anti-spoof resilience for carrier landings.

DIGAR is equipped to deliver sophisticated digital beamforming capabilities, which provide superior immunity against jamming across various operational environments. The technology allows for multiple simultaneous steered beams, thus ensuring consistent positioning data regardless of the conditions.

A Holistic Approach to Military GPS Solutions

BAE Systems continues to innovate with its comprehensive line of M-Code GPS and anti-jam products. Their advancements offer reliable navigation solutions not only for airborne systems but also for precision munitions, handheld receivers, and various embedded applications.

The engineering and manufacturing of these military GPS products take place at BAE Systems' dedicated facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, underscoring the company's commitment to domestic production and development. As military needs evolve, BAE Systems aims to stay ahead of the curve, contributing to the safety and effectiveness of the U.S. Navy and other defense operations.
