Celebrating 70 Years of Antarctic Research: The Great Antarctic Exhibition Comes to Tokyo

Great Antarctic Exhibition in Tokyo

From July 1 to September 27, 2026, a remarkable exhibition titled Great Antarctic Exhibition will open at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Tokyo. Organized by Miraikan, the National Institute of Polar Research, Dream Studio, TV Asahi, and Asahi Shimbun, this event celebrates the 70th anniversary of Japan’s Antarctic research endeavors, providing a unique glimpse into the challenges and activities undertaken in this extreme environment.

In 1956, the first Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition set sail from Harumi Pier in Tokyo aboard the Antarctic research vessel Sōya, marking the beginning of Japan's bold journey to the South Pole. As we approach the 70th anniversary of this pioneering effort, the exhibition aims to highlight the invaluable data collected in Antarctica, a place largely untouched by human activities, offering a direct reflection of our planet’s current state. With around 90% of the Earth's ice held in Antarctica, understanding the implications of ice melt here is critical for future environmental changes. The research teams utilize cutting-edge scientific technologies to unravel the complexities of climate change.

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to join the special Antarctic observation team and engage with stunning visuals and hands-on exhibits that showcase the diverse missions conducted by Japanese Antarctic researchers. It’s a chance to reflect on our planet’s future while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in such a remote region.

Highlights of the Exhibition

1. Rare Artifacts and Ice from Antarctica

The exhibition will display authentic samples of Antarctic ice, often regarded as a time capsule of past climate changes, and precious meteorites collected from the icy continent. Visitors can interact with over 30 samples, including a rare Mars meteorite and iron meteorites that are unique to Antarctica.

2. Immersive Experiences

Engage with the Antarctic environment through breathtaking visuals of glaciers and auroras, alongside experiential exhibits like the “Penguin Census” and “Blizzard Experience.” These interactive displays not only entertain but also educate attendees about the various scientific discoveries emanating from Antarctica and their relevance to understanding Earth’s climatic dynamics and cosmic connections.

For instance, the Penguin Census involves annual surveys in the Adélie penguin breeding grounds near Showa Station, contributing vital data regarding these iconic creatures and their changing habitat, which is essential for long-term monitoring of climate impacts.

Messages from Leaders

In light of the 70th anniversary, Yoshifumi Nagaki, Director of the National Institute of Polar Research, expressed that this exhibition embodies the pioneering spirit of exploration and the intrinsic desire to contribute to humanity through science. He encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the exhibition activities, fostering a shared commitment to exploring the unknown.

Similarly, Seiji Aoki, leader of the 67th Antarctic Expedition, shared his excitement for the exhibition as a means to deepen public understanding and interest in the groundbreaking findings and daily operations of the researchers in this harsh, yet fascinating, environment.
