Veterans United's New Vietnam War Documentary to Stream on Veterans Day

'Where We Once Stood': A Journey Through the Past

Veterans United Home Loans is set to release its first feature-length documentary titled Where We Once Stood on Prime Video this Veterans Day. Narrated and executive produced by the celebrated actor and veteran advocate Gary Sinise, this poignant film follows a group of Vietnam Veterans as they return to Vietnam, revisiting the locations that shaped their military experiences half a century after the end of the war.

A Journey Back in Time

Filmed in 2025 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War's conclusion, Where We Once Stood captures the raw emotions of Veterans revisiting significant sites from their past. Many of these men had previously struggled to share their wartime memories—stories filled with triumphs, losses, and unresolved emotions. The documentary offers a unique perspective, depicting their journey toward healing through dialogue and camaraderie.

Among the featured Veterans are notable figures such as Lt. Col. Robert “Bob” Jeffrey, a former prisoner of war who bravely endured more than seven years in North Vietnam, and Maj. James “Jim” Taylor, who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during a crucial firefight in November 1967. The film also highlights the life of Capt. Buddie Joe “BJ” Penn, who made history as the first Black battalion officer at the U.S. Naval Academy and later served as the acting secretary of the Navy.

The Healing Process

Buddie Joe Penn reflects on his experience, stating, “I came home from Vietnam carrying a lot of anger, and for years, there were things I just didn't talk about. Going back with other Vietnam Veterans gave me the chance to share things I had never told anyone before. Those conversations helped heal some of the wounds I have carried for more than 50 years.” His statement embodies the film’s message about the importance of shared experiences among Veterans when addressing the scars that war has left behind.

Pam Swan, the vice president of military relations at Veterans United, shares insight into the documentary’s mission. “None of the Veterans on this trip had returned to Vietnam since the war's end, and we wanted them to do it on their own terms,” she explains. “The men in this film represent just a handful of the millions who served, and their experiences are part of our nation's history. We owe it to that generation to ensure those stories are recorded and told in their own words.”

A Call for Remembrance

The documentary has been screened at various locations, including Washington, D.C., Nashville, and the USS Midway in San Diego. It adds to the growing narrative of recognition for Vietnam Veterans, many of whom did not receive the welcome they deserved upon returning home. Gary Sinise emphasizes this sentiment: “These men returned to places where they fought and lost friends more than 50 years ago. This film is another opportunity to recognize them and ensure their experiences aren't forgotten.”
