Experience the Nostalgic Charm of Retro Appliances at Tokiwa-sou Exhibit

Explore the Retro Appliance Exhibit at Tokiwa-sou

Starting from November 1, 2025, the Tokiwa-sou Retro Museum in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, is hosting an exciting exhibition titled "Retro Appliances Gather Here!". This exhibition celebrates the golden era of Japanese household technology and provides an immersive look at the beloved appliances that shaped daily life during the Showa period.

A Look Back at the Showa 30s

The exhibition highlights the three coveted appliances known as the 'Three Sacred Treasures' of the early Showa 30s: electric refrigerators, black-and-white televisions, and electric washing machines. Each of these items not only marked a technological advancement but also represented the aspirations of the middle class in Japan. Visitors will have the chance to see how these appliances evolved over the years, with numerous retro products and everyday items on display to illustrate these transformations.

An Interactive Experience

The exhibit goes beyond traditional displays. Visitors can engage with the past through various interactive spots designed to touch, operate, and photograph the appliances. Additionally, the museum has recreated a classic dining room scene from the 70s, providing a nostalgic atmosphere that is sure to evoke fond memories for many attendees.

Collaborations and Special Features

In a nod to Tokyo's local culture, the exhibition includes a collaborative corner with Bic Camera, a well-known electronics retailer based in Toshima Ward. This partnership aims to deepen the connection between the community and the history of household appliances.

The museum is also offering related activities, such as workshops that allow participants to experience laundry techniques from the Showa era, guided mini-tours focused on life in the 40s and 50s, and gallery talks discussing the evolution of appliances. All events are free of charge and do not require reservations, making it easy for families and friends to join in the fun—perfect for those looking to explore the intricacies of Showa culture through technology.

As the exhibit is set to conclude on February 15, 2026, with less than a month left, there is no better time to visit and engage with these remarkable pieces of history. The nostalgic charm of these retro appliances promises to be both educational and entertaining for visitors of all ages.
