Experience the Legacy: Helen Smith Art Auction at Lockhouse Gallery

Helen Smith Painting Exhibit and Silent Auction

On September 16, 2025, the Lockhouse Gallery in Brunswick, Maryland, will host a remarkable exhibit featuring the stunning works of local artist Helen Smith. This event will culminate in a silent auction on September 27, where attendees will have the chance to purchase these unique pieces and support an excellent cause. Proceeds from the auction will benefit both the Brunswick Food Bank and the Brunswick Arts Council.

Helen Smith, an icon in the Frederick County art scene, dedicated over eight decades to her craft. Born in 1894, she became an influential figure, documenting the history of Frederick through her paintings. Her journey began at the Maryland Institute of Art, where she graduated in 1916. Smith was a trailblazer for women artists, continuing to create art until her demise at the age of 103 in 1997. She also played a vital role in education as a professor of art at Hood College.

Throughout her life, Smith faced numerous challenges, including the Great Depression, yet she persevered, establishing herself as a successful entrepreneur in a male-dominated profession. Her legacy is preserved in various forms, including a book titled _Frederick's Legacy - The Art of Helen L. Smith_, which highlights her impact on the local community. A downloadable version is available at the Historical Society of Frederick's website.

Lockhouse Gallery has acquired a stunning collection of 22 original pieces from the Guy Whidden Estate, consisting of 21 watercolors depicting iconic Frederick landmarks and one eglomise. These works reflect Smith's profound connection to her community and capture landmarks like the spires of Frederick City, the Barbara Fritchie House, and the gazebo in Baker Park. Each piece carries the story of Helen Smith’s friendships, notably with Guy Whidden II, a decorated World War II veteran and Smith’s long-time collector.

The silent auction will take place at Lockhouse Gallery from 5 PM to 8 PM on September 27, 2025. The event encourages community involvement and provides a platform for local art appreciation while promoting vital services such as food security through donations to the Brunswick Food Bank. Attendees will enjoy light refreshments, including food and beverages, fostering a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere in celebration of Helen Smith’s enduring legacy.

In addition to the auction, personal viewings of the artworks can be arranged prior to the exhibition opening, allowing potential buyers a closer look at these remarkable pieces. The viewing room, featuring photographs and details on each painting, will be accessible via the Lockhouse Gallery website.
