The 2026 Chinese Opera Gala officially commenced on September 23 in the picturesque town of Zhouzhuang. This event promises to be a cornerstone of cultural expression, running through November and offering a rich array of performances as well as exhibitions that celebrate the beauty of Chinese opera. Co-organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the gala features a staggering 57 excerpts and ten full-length operatic productions spanning 46 distinct genres.

The gala's opening ceremony not only showcased the varied styles of Chinese opera but also celebrated achievements in the opera community. Sixteen organizations were honored with commemorative certificates for their exceptional media projects related to opera across China. Notably, the introduction of the "China Kunqu Opera Blue Book 2026" and an innovative AI-generated micro-drama titled "Meeting Liang Chenyu — The Origins of Kunqu Opera" reflects the merging of technology with classical art forms.

Attendees on the gala's opening day were invited to experience an immersive opera setting at the historic Yongqing Garden within Zhouzhuang Ancient Town. In parallel, the Kunshan Opera Museum unveiled the significant exhibition "Flourishing Opera — An Exhibition of Folk Art Masterpieces," which showcases exquisite opera-related artworks curated from the collection of the National Art Museum of China. This exhibition is a vital part of the broader initiative to encourage cultural tourism, aptly named "See a Hundred Operas, Tour Jiangsu."

The gala is organized into five main components, which assure sustained engagement beyond the opening night. These include:
1. Opening and closing ceremonies that frame the entire operatic experience.
2. Performances featuring classical opera excerpts highlighting specific techniques and nuances unique to each genre.
3. Efforts dedicated to the preservation of at-risk opera genres, creating a platform for practitioners to connect and share their craft.
4. Showcasing performances from invited groups, enriching the overall program.
5. Engaging opera forums focusing on the introduction of new works and fostering discussions surrounding the art form.

Furthermore, three innovative programs are specifically designed to attract new audiences, increase awareness of the opera arts, and promote the Wenhua Award winners at the Opera Arts Center. In addition, the "Opera+" initiative aims to connect performances with cultural attractions, enhancing overall visitor experiences in Jiangsu.

Since its inception in 2018, the Kunshan gala has grown significantly, hosting seven editions up until 2025. This annual event has become a vital platform for showcasing China’s operatic heritage, drawing a diverse array of performers representing 348 recognized opera genres, as well as incorporating forms like puppet theater and shadow puppetry. The gala's impressive attendance statistics speak volumes; over 214,000 guests have attended in person, and online engagement has surpassed 355 million views.

As the 2026 edition unfolds, it promises to encapsulate both the traditional essence and modern interpretations of Chinese opera, making it an unmissable event for enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
