Gordon Charles MacLean Returns to Northeast Florida to Launch His First Book and Inspire Mindfulness

Gordon Charles MacLean Returns Home

Gordon Charles MacLean, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a native of Northeast Florida, is back in his home state to launch his debut book titled The Awake Code: 39 Rules for Living a Fully Engaged Life. With October recognized as National Book Month, the timing is ideal for readers to rediscover literature and explore new ideas that can transform their lives.

In his book, MacLean poses a thought-provoking question: Are we truly engaged in our lives or merely going through the motions? He draws from his rich experiences in the military, commercial real estate, and entrepreneurship to provide readers with 39 practical principles that encourage living with purpose, awareness, and intent.

MacLean's journey into military service began when he was a young man searching for direction. He became a member of the U.S. Air Force’s 9th Reconnaissance Wing, where he played a crucial part in classified operations involving electronic warfare and reconnaissance aboard U-2 aircraft. This experience instilled in him values like discipline, responsibility, and resilience - principles that would heavily influence his life and leadership style later on.

After his service, MacLean built a successful career in commercial real estate, managing various sectors, including office, retail, multifamily, and industrial properties. Throughout his over three-decades-long career, he concluded more than 200 transactions. However, the 2009 financial crisis posed a significant challenge, causing him to lose much of what he had worked so hard to achieve. Instead of succumbing to despair, this setback led him to introspect on his life choices and strategies, inspiring him to document the lessons learned along the way. These reflections eventually materialized into the foundation for The Awake Code.

“This isn’t just motivation or a theory,” says MacLean. “It’s lived experience tested through pressure and failure. This book has no fluff or clichés; it delivers principles that you can rely on.” Each chapter of The Awake Code is a blend of personal narratives, insights from influential thinkers, reflection prompts, and actionable steps. Key topics include leadership, resilience, self-awareness, generosity, meaningful relationships, and personal responsibility.

MacLean envisions his book as a catalyst for change, especially for professionals, veterans, entrepreneurs, and individuals navigating significant life transitions. He hopes to inspire them to recognize areas where they may be merely “sleepwalking” through life and to take deliberate steps toward a more engaged existence.

In addition to his compelling book, MacLean is launching The Awake Society, a community focused on fostering the principles outlined in The Awake Code. This initiative aims to connect individuals who aspire to lead lives filled with purpose and intentionality, forming meaningful relationships with others who share similar values.

For MacLean, returning to Northeast Florida for this launch is particularly poignant. His roots in Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach are where many of his foundational life lessons originated.
