Tokyo Fashion Contests: Discovering and Nurturing Next Generation Designers

As of May 15, 2026, Tokyo has kicked off the call for entries to the Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo (NFDT) and the Sustainable Fashion Design Award (SFDA). These competitions aim to uncover and cultivate the next wave of fashion designers, especially those involved in inclusive design and sustainable practices. This year’s entry deadline is set for July 14.

Competitions Overview

The NFDT is tailored for students residing in Tokyo, while the SFDA also welcomes amateur designers. The contests have four categories focusing on the utilization of traditional kimono fabrics:
1. Open Category (Free Theme)
2. Inclusive Design Category (Focusing on designs for individuals with disabilities)
3. Wearables Category
4. Fashion Goods Category (Including bags, accessories, shoes, etc.)

In 2025, the total number of submissions reached around 2,000, solidifying these contests as significant platforms for emerging designers to launch their brands.

Judging and Support

Judges include prominent figures such as Katsuhiro Hibino, President of Tokyo University of the Arts, and notable designers like Kunihiko Morinaga from ANREALAGE. The final evaluation will take place in March 2027 during a fashion show, where selected finalists will present their works. General public voting through social media will also play a crucial role in selecting a special award recipient.

Both competitions emphasize not just the evaluation of designs but also the cultivation of talent. Workshops led by Paris Collection designers, along with business experiences, are provided for participants who advance to subsequent rounds. Winners will receive up to 1 million yen in prize money, brand launch support, and opportunities to showcase their work in Paris.

The Unique Aspects of NFDT and SFDA

1. Inclusive Design: This category ensures that the designs serve individuals with disabilities, merging functionality with fashion. Experts from disability support organizations will join the judging panel to enrich the selection process.
2. Sustainable Practices: The SFDA promotes the innovative use of traditional kimono fabrics, offering entrants a chance to blend cultural heritage with contemporary fashion trends.

The competitions not only highlight budding creativity but also serve as a launchpad for successful careers. Many past winners have successfully established their brands, contributing to advancements in fashion that are aligned with sustainability and inclusivity.

A Vision for Tokyo's Fashion Future

Tokyo aspires to position itself among global fashion capitals like Paris, Milan, and New York. The NFDT and SFDA competitions are part of the city’s strategy to promote the fashion and apparel industry. By nurturing young talent and fostering new ideas, these contests aim to ensure that Tokyo remains a relevant player on the international fashion stage.

As these competitions evolve, they continue to showcase local talent on a world stage, illustrating Tokyo’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive fashion. Group submissions and multiple entries are encouraged, inviting artists from various fields such as visual arts and digital media to contribute.
