Culture in Motion: A Cultural Revolution in Southern California
In a dynamic collaboration between
The Apollo and
Kwanza Jones, the
Culture In Motion™ project is gearing up to make waves across Southern California starting January 24, 2026. Coinciding with Grammy week, this national arts and empowerment tour aims to bring together diverse communities and celebrate creativity like never before. Inspired by The Apollo's cultural heritage, this initiative integrates local voices and community engagement, ensuring that art and expression reach beyond conventional venues.
A Visionary Initiative
Culture In Motion isn't just about art; it’s about empowerment and connecting with communities in meaningful ways. Designed around the actual needs of each neighborhood, this initiative will transform public spaces into hubs of cultural exchange and creative expression. By showcasing local artists and creators, it celebrates the vibrant tapestry that constitutes Los Angeles and its surrounding areas. Each event will stem from four key pillars: artistic accessibility, community engagement, empowerment, and cultural preservation, all while reflecting the spirit and identity of the respective communities.
Robert Sausedo, President and CEO of Community Build, Inc., emphasizes that Culture In Motion embodies the essence of the
SUPERCHARGED movement initiated by Kwanza Jones. This movement is dedicated to sustaining investments in cultural heritage and artistic traditions within institutions like The Apollo and communities like Los Angeles. The initiative aims to respond directly to community needs while transforming shared values into public resources that fortify the creative economy.
Collective Energy in Motion
Kwanza Jones, an influential figure in the arts and a board member of The Apollo Theatre, expresses that Culture In Motion serves as a vibrant embodiment of art, empowerment, and community spirit. “Culture never stands still, and neither should we. Culture In Motion is all about bringing the essence of The Apollo beyond its historic walls and into the streets, allowing creators and communities to shape and uplift culture together.”
To mark the launch of this initiative, a symbolic kick-off ceremony will take place in Harlem, coinciding with The Apollo’s 92nd anniversary. This milestone is not just about celebrating the iconic venue; it signifies its evolution into a vibrant, flowing cultural experience, reachable to everyone.
Michelle Ebanks, President and CEO of The Apollo, highlights that for over ninety years, the theater has been a cornerstone that intersects culture, community, and possibility. Through Culture In Motion, they are extending this legacy into new communities, paving the way for new pathways of engagement, creativity, and connection as they step into the next century.
This initiative wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from the
Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano Fund. For more information on public programs and community engagement opportunities in Southern California, visit
