Agriculture in Xinjiang is undergoing a remarkable transformation thanks to cutting-edge technology, particularly in cotton farming. In Yuli County, it has been reported that a vast cotton field covering 3,000 mu (approximately 280 football fields) can now be managed by just two individuals. This dramatic reduction in manpower is not due to less work, but rather the implementation of smart farming technologies that have streamlined processes and increased productivity.

The two farmers, equipped with smartphones and tablets, oversee a range of Internet of Things (IoT) devices that continuously monitor farming conditions. These devices provide critical real-time data on weather patterns and soil conditions, thereby aiding in effective decision-making. With this information, a sophisticated management system generates recommendations on when to sow, ensuring optimal conditions for planting. Moreover, this system also employs a smart fertigation mechanism, allowing farmers to control both irrigation and fertilization at the touch of a button.

Automation plays a vital role in pest management, with drones used to monitor fields and deploy pesticides when needed. The results of this tech-led approach have been significant, with the 'super cotton field' achieving unprecedented yields year after year. In fact, the yield per mu has surpassed 500 kg, marking it as a benchmark for high-yield fields in the region.

More than just an agricultural advancement, this model is paving the way for broader employment opportunities. A total of 1,200 farms across Xinjiang have adopted these smart techniques, leading to the cultivation of over 700,000 mu of cotton fields. As farmers spend less time on manual labor, many are starting new businesses or taking on jobs elsewhere, thus diversifying their sources of income.

Around 7 million inhabitants of Xinjiang, nearly half of the farming population, depend on cotton cultivation for their livelihoods. The push for technological integration began decades ago, and by 2024, the mechanization rate for cotton planting and harvesting exceeded an impressive 97%. This long-term vision is not only enhancing productivity but also improving the living standards of numerous families.

However, the pursuit of innovation in agriculture doesn't stop here. Researchers are actively working on advancements that could lead to 'self-managing' fields. Trials are underway with digital systems that autonomously assess various agricultural factors, implement watering protocols, and optimize resource allocation, leading to even greater cost efficiency and production accuracy.

In addition to cotton, other crops are thriving under this new agricultural regime. In Moyu County, for instance, smart greenhouses equipped with intelligent control systems enable local farmers to monitor and manage environmental conditions from their homes. This has opened doors for the cultivation of exotic fruits such as dragon fruit, providing new sources of income and opportunity.

The growth of smart agriculture exemplifies how technology can transform traditional practices, fostering prosperity and self-sufficiency in rural areas. In Xinjiang, as these changes continue to unfold, they reflect a hopeful narrative of economic growth driven by innovation, ensuring a better quality of life for countless families in the region.
