Avantor and Population Council Collaborate for Innovative HIV Prevention Solution

Avantor and Population Council Foster Innovative HIV Prevention Product

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Avantor’s NuSil® brand has announced an expansion of its partnership with the Population Council to develop a new long-acting HIV prevention solution – a three-month dapivirine vaginal ring. This new initiative follows the success of the one-month version, designed to empower women with greater control over their HIV prevention measures.

The partnership aims to tackle one of the most pressing health issues globally—HIV. Although significant strides have been made in awareness and treatment, many women, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, face difficulties accessing preventive methods. The groundbreaking three-month dapivirine vaginal ring, which is set to undergo regulatory approval, is designed for ease of use and provides a longer duration of protection with just four inserts needed annually, as opposed to the twelve required for the one-month version.

Enhanced Convenience and Efficacy

The development of this extended-release ring is a timely response to an urgent need in public health. Regularity in the use of preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission. Already approved in twelve countries, the one-month dapivirine ring offers a valuable tool for women aged 16 and above, including those who are breastfeeding. Recognizing the lessons learned from this earlier initiative, Avantor is now focused on supporting the design and development of a product that enhances adherence and consistency in usage, thereby improving its overall effectiveness.

Among the core features of this new ring are NuSil’s high-purity medical-grade silicones, which ensure reliability in both drug release and mechanical performance over the three-month period. Uwe Winzen, Senior Vice President and General Manager at NuSil, articulated the importance of this collaboration: "HIV remains a major global public health concern, with a disproportionate burden on women. We are proud to partner with the Population Council on this groundbreaking initiative that has the potential to significantly advance HIV prevention efforts worldwide."

Commitment to Women's Health

The Population Council is equally invested in providing a wider array of options for women and adolescent girls in their fight against HIV. Kyle Kleinbeck, a Senior Scientist at the Council, highlighted the importance of affordability, convenience, and the ability to choose a suitable prevention method. "The three-month dapivirine vaginal ring represents a significant advancement, offering a long-acting product that protects against HIV transmission, allowing women the freedom to choose what works best for them."

Expanding on the history of collaboration, NuSil has been instrumental in supplying high-purity silicones for the development of medical devices and drug delivery systems for nearly two decades. With renewed focus, the partnership seeks to expedite global measures aimed at eradicating the HIV epidemic.

As part of its ongoing commitment, the Population Council has submitted the three-month ring for regulatory review to the European Medicines Agency, with plans to seek additional approvals in not only sub-Saharan Africa but also other regions where HIV is prevalent. Early clinical studies suggest that the new three-month iteration delivers increased levels of dapivirine compared to its monthly counterpart, indicating potential improvements in efficacy and user acceptability.

Avantor continues to strengthen its role in shipping critical products and services to the life sciences sector. Their mission remains focused on bolstering healthcare innovations that can address pressing global health challenges. With relevant developments ongoing, both Avantor and the Population Council's collaborative efforts are set to bring about a major shift in HIV prevention methods that could save countless lives across the globe.
