AltaPointe's Behavioral Health Crisis Center Achieves Milestone

In a remarkable achievement, AltaPointe Health has revealed that its Behavioral Health Crisis Center generated an astounding $101.5 million in savings for the Mobile community since its inception in May 2021. This milestone underscores the center's pivotal role in transforming behavioral health care by offering much-needed alternatives for individuals facing crises.

The center serves as a vital resource, providing prompt and effective psychiatric care while significantly diverting patients from traditional and often overburdened emergency services. In doing so, it connects individuals in crisis to appropriate treatment and support, while alleviating costs for the entire healthcare system. This initiative aims to reduce the reliance on emergency rooms and hospitals, which can be less suitable for mental health emergencies.

Over the past two years, the Behavioral Health Crisis Center has seen significant impacts. It has successfully diverted more than 4,100 individuals from inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, assisted over 2,768 individuals from arrest scenarios, and redirected nearly 4,800 people from needing ambulance services. Moreover, it has provided crucial interventions for 1,520 individuals facing involuntary commitment and more than 5,705 people who would have otherwise sought care in local emergency departments. These services have also notably contributed to the prevention of over 3,000 suicides and reduced nearly 2,853 overdoses in the region.

Patients can access services around the clock, ensuring they receive prompt care during critical moments. The center features both a 23-hour stabilization unit and an extended observation unit, allowing stays of up to seven days.
