Creating a Child-Friendly Urban Environment: IKEBUKURO LIVING LOOP x Sunshine City PLAYPARK

IKEBUKURO LIVING LOOP x Sunshine City PLAYPARK: An Intertwining of Fun and Sustainability

In the heart of Ikebukuro, a vibrant urban area in Tokyo, an innovative initiative aims to transform the cityscape into a child's playground. The event, titled IKEBUKURO LIVING LOOP x Sunshine City PLAYPARK, is scheduled to take place on multiple weekends: April 4, May 2, June 6, and October 30 to November 1. This event is designed to provide children with the opportunity to learn about sustainability while enjoying themselves through various fun activities.

The Purpose Behind the Event

This exciting endeavor acts as a sub-event of the IKEBUKURO LIVING LOOP project, which first launched in 2017 with the goal of creating a community atmosphere reminiscent of a cozy living room. The project focuses on revitalizing the East Ikebukuro area, encouraging interaction among businesses, government, educational institutions, and community organizations. Over 20 partners, including local governmental bodies and companies, are collaborating to offer stimulating workshops and engaging sports activities designed to spark curiosity and creativity in young minds.

Urban areas have faced challenges in providing safe, open spaces for children to play and grow, primarily dictated by family circumstances and environmental factors. Hence, the PLAYPARK serves as a crucial opportunity to merge commercial spaces with public areas, creating a balanced environment where children can simultaneously play, learn, and socialize.

A Platform for Diverse Experiences

PLAYPARK is a family-centered project initiated by Sunshine City, in direct response to the high demand for child-friendly spaces within Toshima Ward. The platform encapsulates a range of activities, from sports and arts to crafts and stage shows. The goal is to create a space where children can indulge in their desires to “try it out” and enjoy a carefree learning experience.

The initiative emphasizes reducing the gap in opportunities for children, ensuring that they have access to various experiences outside of the classroom, such as hobbies, travel, nature experiences, and cultural activities. This effort is aligned with the Children and Families Agency's vision, which recognizes play and experiential activities as fundamental to the healthy growth of children.

Sunshine City, as a large multi-purpose facility, welcomes a diverse audience, from kids to adults. Leveraging this feature, PLAYPARK aims to be a space where families can gather, creating cherished memories along the way. It's a place designed to be easily accessible where families can enjoy a vibrant environment, encouraging children to express themselves and explore their interests.

What to Expect

In 2025, the event anticipates featuring various exhibits, including:
  • - Sword Fighting Performances and Samurai Action Experiences: Children can observe live action performances and enroll in workshops to learn the basics of sword fighting, bringing a taste of traditional Japanese culture to life.
  • - Eco Workshops: In collaboration with Chiba University of Commerce and Branding Port, workshops will be held to educate children about environmental sustainability and self-branding, linking educational themes with hands-on activities designed to inspire the younger generation.

A Message from Sunshine City

As Sunshine City's representative commented, “We want PLAYPARK to be a lively venue where children can discover and inspire their creativity through diverse content provided by various vendors. We encourage families to stop by, as it might unveil new aspects of your child’s personality. We hope this event contributes to creating lasting memories for all families.”

The event strives to be a memorable experience, promoting not only play but also learning and engagement with the community.
