Cole Engineering Secures $62 Million U.S. Army Contract for Innovative Stinger Training Systems

Cole Engineering secures a major contract with the U.S. Army

On July 1, 2025, Cole Engineering Services, Inc. (CESI), a subsidiary of By Light Company, announced a significant achievement in defense contracting by securing a $62 million production contract with the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation (PEO STRI). This award will enable CESI to deliver over 100 Stinger Training Systems (STS) within the next five years.

The Stinger Training Systems marks a critical advancement in the Army's modernization efforts under the Synthetic Training Environment (STE). This innovative project is part of the Live Training Systems (STE-LTS) Increment 1, which aims to close gaps in live force-on-force training while offering scalable, multi-domain realism that is crucial for modern military operations.

Enhancing Live Training Experiences

CESI's commitment to improving live training experiences has been evident through its comprehensive development of advanced training solutions. The STS is designed to deliver high-fidelity training experiences that closely mimic real battlefield conditions. The emphasis on realism, coupled with CESI's advancements in technology, positions it as a pivotal player in the enhancement of military training.

According to Thomas Fransson, Senior Vice President of Simulation Products & Services at CESI, “At the core of our STS solution is CESI's commercial artificial intelligence and computer vision application that revolutionizes optical tracking and engagement fidelity.” This innovative approach not only boosts training effectiveness but also fosters greater trust among warfighters in their systems. The importance of trustworthy training systems cannot be overstated, as they are vital for ensuring that soldiers are adequately prepared for whatever challenges they may face in real combat scenarios.

Integration with Current Systems

The STS integrates seamlessly with current Tactical Engagement Simulation Systems (TESS) and STE instrumentation, making it a well-rounded addition to the Army's training programs. The rugged and interoperable design allows the Stinger training systems to be deployed across various Brigade Combat Teams and Combat Training Centers. This enhances readiness by ensuring that troops receive the most realistic and reliable training possible.

The contract also includes provisions for lifecycle support and future integration with STE-LTS capabilities. This indicates a long-term partnership between CESI and the U.S. Army, signifying CESI's commitment to supplying state-of-the-art technology for modern Air Defense Artillery (ADA) training. The integration of AI-enhanced optical targeting within the STS further demonstrates CESI's forward-thinking approach to military instruction.

The Launch of the By Light AI Lab

In conjunction with the STS project, By Light has recently launched the AI Lab, an innovation hub aimed at accelerating the development, testing, and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions across various sectors including defense, cybersecurity, and enterprise.

This dedicated AI Lab serves as a collaborative center of excellence where advanced machine learning, generative AI, and data analytics are integrated into mission-critical systems. By emphasizing ethical AI practices and real-time threat detection, the AI Lab is set to make significant contributions to national security and digital transformation across its operational domains.
