Exploring the Art Brut 2026 Touring Exhibition in Tokyo

Art Brut 2026 Touring Exhibition: "Sozo Training! - Draw It Out, Connect It, Here in This Place -"

The bustling artistic atmosphere of Tokyo is set to become even more vibrant with the upcoming Art Brut 2026 Touring Exhibition titled "Sozo Training! - Draw It Out, Connect It, Here in This Place -". This exhibition, organized by the Shibuya Park Street Gallery in collaboration with Tokyo Metropolitan Government, will start on October 10 and run until December 27, 2026.

This marks the seventh edition of the exhibition series, aimed at raising interest in Art Brut, or “raw art.” Art Brut, a term coined by the French artist Jean Dubuffet, refers to artworks created outside the boundaries of the conventional art world. The exhibition will feature a joint curation with the Hajimari Museum, known for its pioneering focus on Art Brut.

The curatorial team from Hajimari Museum has selected seven artists whose work captivates viewers with their authentic expressions and emotional depth. These artists have an unparalleled ability to draw from their personal experiences and convey powerful messages through their creations.

Hajimari Museum, located in Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Prefecture, is a small yet significant institution overseen by the social welfare organization Azumai Ikuen. Since its establishment in June 2014, the museum has transformed a 140-year-old former sake brewery, making it a unique space where art and welfare can coexist. It aims to foster a welcoming environment where people can gather and appreciate the beauty of human expression, inspiring a more inclusive society.

The exhibition will include works from notable artists such as Daisuke Kagawa, Chiharu Shimizu, Atsushi Sugiura, Boss Taguchi, Tsukuro Nuka, Masaru Honda, and Haruka Mori, all arranged in alphabetical order. Their artworks are expected to reflect the rich interconnections between individuals and communities.

The exhibition will also highlight the collaboration between curators Ken-Yoshi Okabe, Tatsuya Kobayashi, and Ai Omasa, who bring fresh perspectives and their deep passion for Art Brut.
