Joyful Laughter for Families with Severely Disabled Children
On August 23, 2026, the non-profit organization EPO will host a special comedy show titled "Bakuwara" at COCOLON BASE in Edogawa, Tokyo. This event is tailored specifically for children with severe disabilities and their families, aiming to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for them to experience live comedy.
The primary goal of Bakuwara is to offer an opportunity for families who often face challenges in attending events, such as medical care requirements and mobility issues, to enjoy a day filled with laughter and joy. The COCOLON BASE venue has been thoughtfully equipped with mat seating, power for medical devices, and diaper change areas to ensure a comfortable experience for all attendees.
Breaking Barriers to Enjoy Entertainment
Many families with severely disabled children often find it hard to participate in local entertainment events due to several obstacles. Even when an event is nearby, concerns regarding inadequate wheelchair accessibility, the lack of facilities for medical needs, and potential disruptions during medical care can deter families from attending. COCOLON recognizes these barriers and aims to make entertainment more inclusive, allowing everyone to share in the joy of live performances.
The concept of Bakuwara stems from COCOLON's dedication to delivering an environment where families can safely enjoy live performances together. With EPO operating four developmental support and after-school care centers in Tokyo, we ensure that necessary amenities are readily available throughout the experience.
A Unique Experience for Children and Families
One of the standout features of Bakuwara is the proximity to performers. Unlike traditional theaters, families will have the chance to laugh and bond together in an accessible setting, enriching their experience. Live comedy will be performed by an exciting lineup of comedians, including Inu Connection, Hotaruika Kagoshima Taro, and Chapati.
Moreover, for those unable to attend in person due to health concerns or logistical issues, Bakuwara will also be livestreamed. This allows families to enjoy the show from the comfort of their homes, ensuring that everyone can partake in the laughter. This dual approach emphasizes our commitment to inclusivity, allowing families to choose the most suitable way to participate in the event.
Building New Opportunities for Family Outings
At COCOLON, we view this event as more than just a fun outing; it serves as a vital opportunity for social participation. Families of severely disabled children often experience significant preparation and considerations when planning outings, which can create psychological barriers against venturing into new environments. By providing a welcoming and fun experience at Bakuwara, we hope to inspire families to think, "Let’s go out again!" or "We should participate in the next event as well!"
COCOLON strives to cultivate a community where play, learning, and connection become central to the lives of children with severe disabilities and their families. We are committed to organizing diverse events that allow families to enrich their experiences together and imagine a world where everyone can thrive socially.
