ChangAn's New Factory in Rayong: A Leap Towards Sustainable Manufacturing Excellence

ChangAn's New Manufacturing Hub in Rayong

On May 16, 2025, ChangAn Automobile officially launched its highly anticipated factory in Rayong, Thailand, marking a significant milestone for the company and the Southeast Asian automotive landscape. This facility is designed with sustainability at its core, integrating low-carbon technologies and smart manufacturing processes aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and maintaining high-quality standards.

The inauguration coincided with the impressive achievement of ChangAn producing its 28.59 millionth vehicle, a testament to its expanding international footprint. This new factory stands as a central piece of ChangAn’s Vast Ocean Plan, which shifts the focus from merely exporting products to establishing robust industrial operations that can support global market expansion.

Innovative Production Capabilities

The factory boasts five smart workshops, including dedicated areas for welding, painting, general assembly, and engine and battery assembly. With 90% automation in critical quality control stations, it ranks among the most automated facilities in Thailand's automotive sector. The use of energy-efficient technologies aligns seamlessly with sustainable development goals, featuring a photovoltaic system capable of generating 14 MW, which will cover 45% of the factory’s electrical needs. Additionally, strategies such as air recirculation systems, natural lighting solutions, and rainwater recycling will contribute to a projected 5% reduction in energy costs.

ChangAn's innovative manufacturing framework is engineered to minimize production costs while efficiently creating high-value vehicles. Equipped with 39 welding robots and advanced joining techniques such as FDS (Friction Stir Welding), EPS (Electrolytic Plating System), and SPR (Self-Piercing Riveting), the plant excels in producing durable assemblies. The painting workshop employs 29 robots using sophisticated spray technology that enhances paint longevity to 15 years while reducing emissions by 40%. The assembly line features 140 stations, with 18 fully automated and 125 semi-automated, allowing for the production of multiple vehicle models with diverse powertrains.

Smart and Flexible Manufacturing

Supporting the production of engines and batteries, the motor assembly workshop employs precise alignment technology and visual guidance across 22 battery manufacturing processes. Twenty-five Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) facilitate a flexible and responsive manufacturing workflow.

Prioritizing digital transformation, ChangAn’s factory employs a comprehensive digital ecosystem with microservice architecture to ensure 100% online operation. Real-time production planning enhances supply chain coordination while reducing order delivery cycles from 21 to just 15 days. Moreover, the ChangAn Quality Operations System (CAQOS) implements stringent quality control measures throughout the manufacturing process, encompassing 77 safety cameras and 62 reliable checkpoints to maintain high standards for components and finished vehicles.

Looking Ahead

ChangAn’s ambitions for the Rayong plant are significant, targeting an 80% localization of production processes and the creation of 30,000 jobs, thereby fostering low-carbon growth and supporting Thailand's green transformation initiatives. As a strategic hub for Southeast Asia, the company aims to surpass 5 million vehicle sales by 2030, including 3 million units of new energy vehicles. Over the next three years, ChangAn is set to introduce 12 new energy models and enhance artificial intelligence functionalities in its offerings. A new spare parts center in Rayong will also bolster services for right-hand-drive markets with around-the-clock delivery.

Shen Xinghua, the Executive Director of ChangAn Automobile Southeast Asia Business Unit, remarked, “After 556 days of dedication from more than 2,000 employees and partners worldwide, we have established an efficient, modern, and intelligent factory. The journey has just begun, and together, we aim to build a cleaner, smarter, and stronger future for the automotive industry in Thailand and beyond.”
