International Court of Justice Receives 2026 Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize
On November 9, 2026, a significant event will unfold at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands, as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will be honored with the esteemed 2026 Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the ICJ, the principal judicial body of the United Nations, which has played an integral role in promoting international law and ensuring peaceful resolutions to disputes between nations.
A Historic Recognition
The Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize is one of the world's oldest peace awards, first presented in 1931. It is bestowed upon individuals or institutions that have made outstanding contributions to international peace through their actions or words. The award recognizes not only the ICJ's efforts in settling disputes but also its significant influence in advocating for justice across the globe.
The award ceremony will take place during a High-Level Forum titled "A Reaffirmed Commitment to Promoting, Hosting and Advancing Peace through Law." This forum, organized by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Municipality of The Hague, and the Carnegie Foundation, will convene government representatives, international institutions, academia, and diplomats, all focused on the vital role of international law in promoting peace.
The Role of the ICJ
Established in 1945, the ICJ operates primarily in two capacities: it settles legal disputes submitted by states in accordance with international law, and it provides advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized UN organs. The Court, comprised of 15 judges serving nine-year terms, holds its sessions at the Peace Palace in The Hague, highlighting its unique position away from the UN headquarters in New York.
To date, the ICJ has recorded over 202 cases, currently managing 24 active disputes. Its authority and legitimacy are recognized globally, making it a crucial player in maintaining international stability amidst rising geopolitical tensions. By providing a judicial platform for dispute resolution, the ICJ aids in conflict prevention and promotes adherence to international law.
Advisory Opinions and Global Norms
Besides settling disputes, the ICJ also performs an essential normative function. Its advisory opinions provide important interpretations of international law, influencing matters of self-determination, humanitarian law, and states' responsibilities on a global scale. This advisory role underscores the Court's commitment to legal clarity and the rule of law in enhancing international relations.
Celebrating 80 Years of Commitment to Justice
The 80th anniversary of the ICJ is not just a celebration of its history; it signifies the ongoing importance of the rule of law at a time when multilateralism is increasingly challenged. The award of the Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize highlights the ICJ's pivotal role in advancing a just and lasting peace, reaffirming its position as a cornerstone of the international legal order.
With the increasing caseload and the various challenges it faces, the ICJ's achievement is commendable. The Carnegie Foundation believes that awarding this prize is a fitting tribute to the dedicated efforts of the Court's members and the indispensable support of its staff in promoting global justice.

H.E. Judge Iwasawa Yuji, President of the ICJ, will accept the Peace Prize on behalf of the Court during the ceremony at 3 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Peace Palace. This event is expected to attract significant attention, reflecting the global appreciation for the ICJ's contributions to peace.
