Celebrating 70 Years of STEAM Education: COSI and McGill's Joint Event in Barbados
Celebrating 70 Years of the Bellairs Research Institute
On December 5, 2024, a momentous celebration unfolded as the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), McGill University, and the U.S. State Department joined forces to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Bellairs Research Institute in Barbados. This notable event showcased a full day packed with engaging Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) activities aimed at inspiring local students and promoting the value of STEAM education across the Caribbean.
The festivities were graced by an impressive roster of speakers including scientists, McGill University students, U.S. officials, and other prominent figures in the STEAM community, such as Dr. Frederic Bertley, the President and CEO of COSI. His passionate remarks emphasized the joint commitment to creating a future where a STEAM-literate society thrives, not just in North America, but globally, particularly in regions like the Caribbean.
"Together, COSI, McGill, and the U.S. State Department believe that the advancement of a better world hinges on increasing scientific literacy among young minds," stated Dr. Bertley during his inspiring speech. He noted that the collaborative efforts aim to motivate students in Barbados to consider careers in science and technology.
The Bellairs Research Institute, founded in 1954 as a McGill facility, has historically stood as a significant hub for marine, biological, and technological research. Its mission is rooted in fostering educational and sustainability efforts for international scholars. According to Professor R. Bruce Lennox, Dean of Science at McGill University, the Institute plays a critical role in both education and vital research efforts, which was underscored throughout the day’s events.
"We are thrilled to partner with Dr. Bertley and COSI in this meaningful initiative," remarked Professor Lennox, highlighting the unique bridge his position creates between institutions. The collaborative outreach aims to engage and benefit the Barbadian community profoundly.
In collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, the event organized the distribution of 400 Learning Lunchboxes to local schools, each one designed to include STEAM activities that encourage exploration and learning. Donald Maynard from the U.S. State Department remarked on the importance of such initiatives, stating, "The U.S. Embassy takes pride in working with COSI to supply these science kits, fostering the development of the next generation of STEAM leaders in the Eastern Caribbean."
COSI has established itself as a pioneer in promoting STEAM education worldwide, hosting programs in diverse locales, including India and the Arctic. The Learning Lunchboxes aim to enhance engagement and provide educators with tools to inspire students, regardless of their background. Having distributed over 400,000 Learning Lunchboxes across 40 states and seven countries, COSI emphasizes the need for inclusivity in STEM education.
Dr. Bertley, reflecting on the ongoing need to ignite curiosity in STEAM fields, stated, "Genius knows no boundaries; it transcends race, religion, gender, or economic background. Initiatives like these are vital in cultivating a society that values scientific inquiry and inspires youth everywhere to reach for the stars."
