Thousands Gather to Honor the Carters' Legacy
In a significant gathering of community spirit and commitment, thousands of volunteers, partners, and Habitat homeowners convened in Austin, Texas, on October 26, 2025. This event marks the 39th Annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, a testament to the enduring legacy of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. With the memory of President Carter guiding this initiative, this year's build is particularly poignant as it is the first since his passing.
The project kicked off amidst a backdrop of camaraderie and unity, as volunteers from various backgrounds came together to build 25 homes in an exceptional geothermal neighborhood. Named Whisper Valley, this groundbreaking community will set a precedent for sustainable living, featuring state-of-the-art geothermal heat pumps and solar panels, all designed to operate within an advanced energy-efficient framework. The homes constructed during this project are expected to average a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score of 25, signifying that they will not only consume energy efficiently but will also produce more energy than they utilize.
This year, the 2025 project has expanded its reach with the introduction of Habitat’s first-ever Rural Rally, which will involve home builds and rehabilitations in over 60 rural communities across 20 different states, showcasing the breadth of Habitat’s commitment to affordable housing across the nation.
“The Carters’ dedication to ensuring that everyone has access to a safe and decent home inspires us to continue their mission,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “As we commence this new chapter, we feel honored to carry forth the incredible legacy of service that they established.” It was in 1984 that the Carters became actively involved with Habitat, leading the organization's efforts to address the issues of unsafe and unaffordable housing that affect countless families nationwide.
Since then, their collaboration with Habitat for Humanity has had far-reaching effects, inspiring more than 108,000 volunteers to participate in various building projects while positively impacting the lives of more than 4,447 families in 14 countries around the globe. The Carters’ vision of building homes and communities that foster hope and opportunity has become a fundamental part of Habitat's mission, resonating deeply with volunteers and families alike.
The participation in this year’s project underscores not only a commitment to the Carters' vision but also plays a vital role in strengthening the fabric of community at a time when affordable housing remains a pivotal issue. Neighbors, families, and dedicated volunteers all contribute their time and energy, exemplifying the power of collective action in creating lasting change.
As the week progresses, more photos and stories will be shared to highlight the impact being made, available at

In conclusion, the 39th Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project not only serves as a tribute to the Carters but also as a beacon of hope for communities aiming for a future where everyone can thrive with a secure place to call home. As volunteers engage in this transformative work, they exemplify the spirit of dedication and love that the Carters so passionately advocated for throughout their lives.
