Celebrating the 21st Wakamono Noh
Hello everyone! We are delighted to announce that the Wakamono Noh Executive Committee is preparing for the 21st annual performance of Wakamono Noh this March. We sincerely thank all who attended and supported last year's 20th event, as your warm encouragement drives us to continue this journey. This year, we remain committed to introducing the beauty of Noh theater to a broader audience.
What is Wakamono Noh?
Founded by Keisuke Shiotsu, who played the lead role during his university days, Wakamono Noh was established with the belief that young people should embrace and learn about Japan's rich cultural heritage. Now, entering its 21st season, the organization has evolved while keeping that core intention alive. This initiative is characterized as "Noh by youth, for youth," and it aims to present an accessible version of Noh to the younger generation who may not be familiar with it. This year, we aim to uphold the cherished value of "connections through Noh," striving to make the seemingly daunting world of Noh more approachable and enjoyable for everyone, whether they are new to the experience or regular attendees.
This Year’s Performance
Main Visual for 'Uminin'
The 21st Wakamono Noh will showcase the intriguing play titled "Uminin" under the theme of "Treasures."
Synopsis of 'Uminin':
Fuzan, the son of Fujiwara no Michitaka, visits Shido-no-Ura in Sanuki to mourn his deceased mother. There, he encounters a mysterious woman from the sea who narrates a tale about a past incident where a jewel was recovered at great personal risk. Ultimately, she reveals to him that she is indeed his mother and vanishes into the sea, leaving behind a letter. As Fuzan performs a memorial service at Shido-ji, his mother appears before him in the form of a Dragon Woman, expressing her joy through dance. We invite you to reflect on your own "treasures" while enjoying this profound performance.
New Experience: After Party!
This year, we are excited to introduce an upgraded "After Party" following the performances, enhancing the traditional after-talk format. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with Noh performers, including Keisuke Shiotsu himself. This event promises to be a special occasion where you can closely examine Noh masks and costumes, directly engaging with the artistry of this time-honored tradition. We encourage all guests to join us after the show for this unique experience.
Tickets for the After Party must be purchased separately.
