Weis Markets Reports Strong Third Quarter Financial Performance Despite Market Challenges

Weis Markets Reports Strong Third Quarter Financial Performance

Weis Markets, Inc. (NYSE: WMK), a prominent Mid-Atlantic food retailer, announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2026, which concluded on September 26, 2026. Despite facing challenges in customer spending, the company enjoyed notable revenue growth and increased profitability.

In a statement, Jonathan H. Weis, the company’s Chairman, President, and CEO, emphasized the balanced results achieved during this quarter, citing a 3.0% increase in total revenue, amounting to $1.28 billion compared to $1.24 billion from the same period last year. Key drivers for this growth included heightened fuel sales and revenues from newly opened stores, which helped offset declines in other areas such as pharmacy, dairy, and produce due to various market factors.

The report highlights that comparable store sales rose by 1.3%, although when excluding fuel sales, this figure showed a decrease of 1.2%. The overall sales performance was somewhat tempered by multiple factors, including changes in pricing from the Inflation Reduction Act affecting pharmacy sales, and lower demand in the produce sector partly due to a Cyclospora outbreak impacting food safety perceptions.

Weis also noted that retail price inflation propelled fuel sales, contributing to the overall revenue increase. In contrast, the supermarket sector experienced pressure as customers remained cautious, constantly searching for better deals and value, which Weis Markets is committed to providing through strategic price investments and enhanced loyalty programs.

Key Financial Highlights

The company’s gross profit for the third quarter was reported at $324.61 million, marking a 5.8% increase compared to the previous year, which is largely attributed to improvements in store inventory management and reduced costs in their supply chain. Consequently, the gross profit margin saw a rise to 25.5%, up from 24.8% in 2025.

Operating income exceeded expectations with an impressive 38.6% increase, totaling $28.51 million. Despite lower investment income and a higher effective tax rate, net income for the quarter climbed to $22.21 million, a substantial rise from $16.90 million recorded in Q3 2025. Consequently, earnings per share (EPS) also increased to $0.90, compared to $0.69 in the same quarter last year.

For the 39-week period year-to-date, Weis Markets reported total revenue of $3.81 billion, reflecting a 4.1% increase from $3.66 billion the previous year. Year-to-date net income rose by 18.1%, totaling $72.92 million, leading to a year-to-date EPS of $2.95, up from $2.38 in 2025.

Quarterly Cash Dividend

In recognition of its strong financial performance and consistent profitability, the Weis Markets' Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.34 per share, payable on November 23, 2026, to shareholders recorded as of November 9, 2026.
