International Collaboration for Sustainable Development
On May 27, 2026, Okayama University, located in Kurashiki, Japan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Vasterbotten region of Sweden during a significant workshop focused on social development, known as "Mötesplats Lycksele". The MoU aims to foster collaboration in areas such as innovation, research, education, and sustainable regional development.
The signing ceremony was attended by key representatives, including Patrick Selström, the regional director for local development in Vasterbotten, and Mitsunobu Kano, the Vice Director of Okayama University responsible for SDGs and social collaboration. This agreement is expected to lay the groundwork for a long-term partnership that encourages joint research, development of innovation systems, promotion of entrepreneurship, and creation of new opportunities in social development.
Both Okayama and Vasterbotten face similar societal challenges, including demographic changes, the need for skilled labor, and regional development outside major urban areas. The collaboration seeks to bring together universities, government agencies, businesses, and local communities to facilitate knowledge exchange and create new international opportunities for residents, companies, and academia. This initiative is designed not only to enhance the well-being of the community, as per Okayama University’s J-PEAKS vision, but also to build a solid international foundation (ecosystem) for nurturing the next generation of highly skilled researchers and young innovators who will lead in the future.
Before the signing, Vice Director Kanou delivered a lecture titled "lighting up a corner". During this presentation, he emphasized the importance of collaboration among universities, industries, government, and local communities in creating new value. He referenced the words of Saichō, stating that everyone's individual talents can contribute to society, forming a crucial basis for future regional innovation and well-being.
In a dialogue with Umeå University President Tora Holmberg, Mr. Kano affirmed the shared interests of Japan and Sweden in science, technology, innovation, and the challenges faced by their respective regions while also appreciating mutual respect for differences. Approachably, he noted that understanding both similarities and differences is essential for truly fruitful international cooperation.
The Vasterbotten region expressed optimism regarding this partnership, anticipating that cooperative efforts with Okayama University will lead to joint solutions for shared societal issues and enhance the innovation environment necessary to create a sustainable future. Media coverage in the region has shown significant interest, highlighting the expected impact of this agreement.
Looking ahead, Okayama University is committed to deepening its collaboration with Vasterbotten and Umeå University, pursuing solutions for local challenges, and contributing to the realization of a sustainable society and international innovation ecosystem. The university continues to be an open, regional hub for distinctive research, and its initiatives are being closely watched by stakeholders.
In conclusion, this partnership signifies a promising step towards not just improving local conditions but also establishing global networks that harness various talents and insights for a better future for both regions involved.
