Novelis Marks Milestone with First Coil Production at New Aluminum Plant in Alabama
Novelis Produces First Coil at New Aluminum Plant
In October 2026, Novelis Inc. achieved a significant milestone by producing the first coil at its recently constructed aluminum rolling and recycling facility located in Bay Minette, Alabama. This major achievement is part of a $5 billion investment aimed at advancing one of the largest aluminum manufacturing projects in the United States in recent decades.
The production of this first coil on the cold mill signifies a crucial step toward operational readiness and commercial shipments, which are anticipated to commence in 2027. Steve Fisher, the president and CEO of Novelis, expressed that this facility is pivotal in enhancing the supply of rolled aluminum in the country while simultaneously bolstering the U.S. manufacturing landscape. "With the North American market being capacity constrained, this investment will help meet long-term market demand, strengthen our U.S. manufacturing footprint, and promote the use of recycled materials in our products," he noted.
Novelis’s Bay Minette facility stands out as the first integrated aluminum recycling and rolling plant established in the United States in over 40 years. Once fully operational, it’s expected to contribute an impressive annual capacity of 600 kilotonnes of rolled aluminum. This output will serve various markets, including beverage packaging, automotive, and specialty products. Moreover, the facility is designed to process an astonishing 15 billion used beverage cans every year through its dedicated recycling center.
As part of its commissioning process, the plant is currently working on qualifying its assets to ensure they meet customer requirements. Novelis aims for commercial shipments to begin in the second quarter of 2027, starting a new chapter in efficient aluminum production. The new site is also anticipated to create up to 1,000 jobs, providing a significant boost to local employment.
Novelis is firmly committed to shaping a sustainable world, focusing on innovative aluminum products and solutions and playing a vital role as the largest aluminum recycler globally. The company is on a mission to be the leading source of low-carbon, sustainable aluminum solutions, striving for a fully circular economy fostering partnerships across the aerospace, automotive, beverage can, and specialty industries worldwide, including regions in North America, Europe, Asia, and South America.
In the fiscal year 2026, Novelis reported remarkable net sales amounting to $18.4 billion, showcasing its strong position in the global market. As a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited and part of the Aditya Birla Group—a multinational conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai—Novelis carries significant responsibility in establishing and fostering environmentally responsible practices in the aluminum industry.
Looking ahead, the initiatives and developments at the Bay Minette facility encapsulate Novelis's strategic vision for the future of aluminum production in the U.S. market. They underline the company's commitment to meeting evolving consumer demands while emphasizing sustainability and recycling, critical components of modern manufacturing practices. With the expected growth in production and job creation, Novelis is poised to make a lasting impact on the industry and the communities it operates in.
