Brevel and Wave Group Join Forces to Create Innovative Fermentation Plant in India
Brevel and Wave Group's Game-Changing Fermentation Plant
In a significant step towards sustainable biomanufacturing, Brevel, a pioneering climate biotech company, has announced its partnership with The Wave Group, a leading Indian conglomerate. Together, they are set to establish a groundbreaking fermentation biomanufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh, North India. This collaboration leverages Brevel's patented illuminated fermentation technology to revolutionize the production of plant-cell culture ingredients.
The new facility will expand upon Brevel's existing capabilities, which currently feature a 5,000-liter bioreactor in Israel. The ambitious project aims for a total production capacity of 300,000 liters, reflecting a substantial scaling up to meet the increasing demand for microalgae products and the growing market for plant-cell culture ingredients. Construction of this state-of-the-art facility is scheduled to commence within the year, with hopes of commencing full-scale production in 18 months. The overall investment for the joint venture is estimated to range between USD 10-15 million.
Illuminated Fermentation Technology
Brevel’s illuminated fermentation technology is a unique blend of controlled fermentation and light in a closed-loop system, which is set to change the biomanufacturing landscape. Unlike traditional methods that rely on dark environments, Brevel’s approach utilizes light to drive the metabolic processes of photosynthetic microorganisms, such as chlorella. This method significantly enhances the production of valuable compounds including chlorophyll and carotenoids. In this innovative setup, sugar serves not only as a source of energy but also provides essential nutrients for the growing microorganisms.
As noted by Yonatan Golan, CEO and co-founder of Brevel, this partnership marks a monumental stride in taking illuminated fermentation technology to an industrial level. It opens the door for extensive opportunities within the realms of microalgae and plant cell culture, ultimately fostering a sustainable future for food ingredients and nutraceutical markets worldwide.
Collaboration with Strategic Importance
The strategic alliance with The Wave Group is in line with Brevel's ethos of supporting sustainable practices. Manpreet Singh Chadha, the chairman of The Wave Group, emphasized the expansion of their portfolio through this collaboration. He believes that Brevel's illuminated fermentation technique, combined with The Wave Group’s expertise in sugar manufacturing, heralds a new era in biomanufacturing. This partnership not only positions The Wave Group as a crucial player in the global market for food and supplements but also supports environmentally responsible practices through the implementation of a zero-waste circular economy model.
Brevel's innovative approach integrates the sugar production waste streams from The Wave Group's sugar mills into the fermentation process. By reusing byproducts, the facility aims to minimize waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Initial trials have shown promising results, suggesting that waste sugar can effectively be repurposed for fermentation.
Looking Ahead
Brevel has a strong commitment to creating resilient, affordable, and sustainable ingredients tailored for the food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. By focusing on developing illuminated fermentation techniques, they aim to provide solutions to meet the rising global demand for alternative ingredients. Their already established commercial presence in the nutraceuticals space has allowed for the successful scaling of technological innovations in a way that addresses market needs.
The Wave Group, on its part, is recognized as a major player in India’s industrial landscape, with a commitment to diverse sectors including sugar manufacturing and infrastructure development.
This collaboration not only represents a significant leap forward for Brevel as they expand into new regions but also reflects the increasing importance placed on sustainable production methods in today’s economy. As these companies work together to usher in a new era of fermentation-based manufacturing, the anticipation for their successful implementation grows.
