Nepal's Government Approves Major Environmental Clearance for State-of-the-Art Binaytara Cancer Hospital

Major Development for Cancer Care in Nepal

On May 26th, 2026, the Government of Nepal marked a significant milestone in healthcare by granting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval for the Binaytara Cancer Hospital. This groundbreaking facility, located in the city of Janakpur, Madhesh Province, represents a $30 million investment in cancer care, with a capacity of 200 beds.

This approval is monumental for the local population, encompassing approximately 25 million individuals across southern Nepal and the adjacent Indian state of Bihar. The approval signifies the successful culmination of extensive collaboration between Binaytara’s team in Nepal and various governmental bodies, paving the way to establish the first comprehensive cancer center in Madhesh Province.

Dr. Binay Shah, Co-Founder and President of Binaytara, heralded the approval as a pivotal moment for cancer treatment in Nepal, emphasizing the importance of allowing people to receive care within their community and family settings. “This state-of-the-art facility will serve not just as a treatment center but as a beacon of hope,” he said.

Addressing a Critical Need

Nepal is faced with more than 22,000 new cancer cases annually, with a staggering 47% of patients in low-and-middle-income countries succumbing to treatable diseases due to late diagnosis and insufficient access to adequate healthcare. The new Binaytara Cancer Hospital aims to rectify this situation by providing essential services not previously available in Madhesh Province, such as radiation oncology, surgical oncology, advanced imaging, and a comprehensive palliative care program.

With the capacity to treat approximately 25,000 patients yearly, this facility is set to boost cancer awareness and education in the community, tackling the stigma and misconceptions surrounding the disease. The hospital will also serve as a training hub for future oncologists and healthcare professionals, addressing workforce shortages in the region and improving care standards.

The Journey to Approval

The journey to this approval involved numerous discussions, technical filings, and intensive consultations with officials at various levels of government. Hari Tiwari, the Country Director for Binaytara in Nepal, noted the considerable effort invested by community members and officials who contributed to this process.

Binaytara has been actively serving patients at its existing facility in Janakpur since 2018, making the establishment of this new hospital an essential expansion of inpatient capacity and spectrum of services. For the first time in Nepal's construction sector, advanced base isolation technology will also be employed in the hospital's design, aimed at ensuring safety during potential earthquakes.

A Bright Future Ahead

This project not only brings crucial healthcare resources closer to home but also supports the longstanding goal of making quality cancer care accessible to every person, regardless of socioeconomic status. “No woman with breast cancer should have to travel for hours to Kathmandu or India for treatment,” Tiwari expressed, reinforcing the project's commitment to local healthcare accessibility.

As Binaytara moves forward in establishing this significant healthcare infrastructure, its influence will extend far beyond cancer treatment alone, fostering a culture of awareness and education about cancer in a historically underserved region.
