Celebrating World Smile Day® with the 'Smile Wall' in NYC
On October 2, 2026, in celebration of World Smile Day®, Smile Train, the largest organization dedicated to cleft care, will unveil its
'Smile Wall' campaign at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. This initiative invites the community to come together to share moments of joy and raise awareness for children affected by cleft conditions.
Creating a Community Canvas
From 8 AM to 5 PM, the
Smile Wall will be installed in The Graybar Passage near the Grand Central Gift Shop. This interactive space will allow visitors to leave messages, drawings, and personal reflections expressing what makes them smile. The idea is to transform a blank wall into a vibrant display of positivity and community connection. This year's campaign marks the second installment of the Smile Wall initiative, which aims to uplift spirits and foster a sense of belonging.
Susannah Schaefer, President and CEO of Smile Train, explains, "A smile has the ability to remind us of something we all share. The Smile Wall gives everyone a chance to spotlight experiences that bring them happiness, reminding us that every smile has a place." The commitment to celebrating positivity is crucial, especially in a world where simple acts of joy can foster community cohesion.
A Call to Action
Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft, a condition that can significantly impact their ability to eat, speak, hear, and breathe. The Smile Wall symbolizes how a smile can be more than a momentary expression; it can represent healing, hope, and a brighter future for children affected by cleft lip and palate. New Yorkers, commuters, and visitors are encouraged to visit and share their smiles.
Midday, the event will feature appearances by notable figures, including cleft-affected NFL cheerleader Jenna Waller and former Miss USA 2021 Elle Smith, who will help celebrate both World Smile Day® and the achievements of those with cleft conditions. Their presence highlights the success stories of individuals transformed by access to cleft care, reinforcing the importance of this cause.
Expanding the Movement
Beyond the main event in NYC, individuals and organizations are invited to create their own Smile Walls at schools, workplaces, community centers, and other gathering places. This grassroots movement allows communities to engage in the celebration and awareness of cleft conditions. Additionally, the initiative extends online, inviting people to contribute to a digital Smile Wall, fostering a wider sense of unity and support.
