HD Hyundai Electric Enhances U.S. Production to Dominate North American Power Transformer Market
HD Hyundai Electric Expands Production in the U.S.
In an ambitious strategic move, HD Hyundai Electric is expanding its operations in the United States, specifically targeting the North American extra high voltage power transformer market. On March 6, 2026, the company celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for a second production facility in Montgomery, Alabama. This new plant is expected to be completed by April next year and marks a significant investment in the region's infrastructure.
The newly established facility, measuring approximately 312,000 square feet, represents an investment of around $200 million. It will increase production capacity by an impressive 50%, incorporating the ability to manufacture 765-kilovolt-class transformers. These high-capacity transformers are crucial for enhancing the reliability and robustness of the United States' electrical transmission network. Upon completion, this expansion is anticipated to contribute an additional 200 billion won to the annual revenue.
Since the establishment of its first U.S. production facility in 2011, HD Hyundai Power Transformers USA has witnessed robust growth. Initially built as the first local production plant by a Korean power equipment manufacturer, it has grown to become the largest power transformer facility in the United States. The company's commitment to the U.S. market is clear, having invested $55 million at the inception of the subsidiary, followed by further sums of $44 million in 2018 and $19 million in 2023 for expansions and improvements.
These continual investments emphasize HD Hyundai Electric's dedication to local operations, which have significantly reduced lead times and improved their responsiveness to customer needs. This local production base has fostered increases in operational performance, with revenue soaring from approximately $100 million in 2017 to around $400 million by 2025. Furthermore, the workforce has expanded from just around 100 employees at the time of the establishment to about 460 in 2025, with the second plant's completion expected to create an additional 200 jobs.
Reflecting on the company's growth, an official from HD Hyundai Electric expressed, "Our North American production subsidiary has been pivotal in enhancing our foothold in the U.S. market through local manufacturing. We are eager to see the successful completion of the second plant and expect it to create synergies with our expansion project in Ulsan, scheduled to be finished this September. This drive will further consolidate our position as the leader in the North American extra high voltage power transformer sector."
This expansion is part of a broader long-term investment strategy in the U.S. aimed at optimizing production capabilities and supporting increasing demand for power transformers in North America. The move signifies HD Hyundai Electric's commitment to not only enhancing its manufacturing capabilities but also contributing to the modernization of the U.S. energy infrastructure.
As the energy landscape continues to evolve, investments like these are essential for meeting the growing demand for reliable and efficient electrical transmission. HD Hyundai Electric's proactive approach in expanding its manufacturing presence in the U.S. positions the company well to meet these future challenges, ensuring its continued leadership in the high voltage transformer market.
