NUHS Launches Innovative AI-Driven Brain Care Initiative to Combat Dementia Undiagnosis
Tackling Dementia with AI in Singapore
The National University Health System (NUHS) has taken a significant step towards enhancing brain health in Singapore by introducing an innovative AI-powered program aimed at confronting the underdiagnosis of dementia. With alarming statistics revealing that over half of dementia cases go undetected in the country, the initiative holds the promise of proactive early intervention and improved overall cognitive health.
The Hidden Epidemic of Dementia
According to research, including the Well-being of the Singapore Elderly (WiSE) 2023 study, 51.5% of individuals with dementia in Singapore remain undiagnosed. This underdiagnosis can lead to missed opportunities for timely intervention, especially considering that around 45% of dementia cases can potentially be prevented through early lifestyle changes.
Dr. Tan Li Feng, a Senior Consultant in Geriatric Medicine and Principal Investigator for the project, emphasizes the challenges faced by older adults and their families. Many believe memory loss is merely a natural part of aging, often overlooking the urgent need for support. With families becoming smaller and more elderly individuals living alone, recognizing early signs of cognitive decline can become increasingly difficult.
